rMBP suddenly died, and the processor is kaput!

Hello everyone,

While using it, my rMBP suddenly died and refused to turn on. Tried all the tricks, reset PRAM and SMC etc. Nothing worked.

Went to the Apple store and they told me the logic board and battery need to be replaced for $1100, which I refused because I’d bought the device for $1000 four years ago.

They said the battery is swollen and that the logic board itself is okay, but the processor on it is dead. So now this device of mine has become a paperweight overnight.

Is there anything I can do here? Can I salvage the RAM and SSD and use it elsewhere?

Update (09/07/2019)

Ok, so I opened it up and went through it slowly. I checked all visible connectors and only one was disconnected (keyboard backlight) and none were loose. All other parts looked normal with no staining or corrosion. So, I removed the heat sink to find dried thermal paste on the processor. I cleaned it up with isopropyl alcohol and microfibre cloth.

Could the dried thermal paste lead to the processor overheating? I used the device pretty heavily for programming (Android Studio, Xcode, Chrome with 15+ tabs, terminal, android emulator etc.). Also, couple of days before the macbook stopped working, it froze suddenly and I had to hold the power button down to restart it. This happened twice. I don't know if it's related in any way.

I've attached the photos here (https://imgur.com/a/18t7REf) if you'd like to look at them and see if I missed anything.

mmm… Let’s first check the logic board. Carefully take the bottom cover off. If the battery is badly swollen you’ll want to take the system outside just in case. What we want to do here is disconnect the battery (follow the first five steps in the guide below) as well as the charger, then press the power button for a minute to fully drain the logic. Now leaving the battery unplugged, plug in the charger the system should spontaneously boot up and the MagSafe should be Amber in color. Did it? If it did your logic board is AOK and you only need a new battery.

As for salvaging anything. Your SSD drive is removable and you can get a case to hold it so you can recover your data as well as use the drive as an external.

But let’s first see if we can first get your system going here.

Hi Dan, thanks for such a detailed answer. I've ordered the screwdriver set so once I receive it I'll open it up and do as you say.

Although, the guy at the store did show me that the problem was with the processor using an ammeter (unsure if that's the name, it was a device with a screen and two connectors). He placed it all over the board to show that the current was flowing normally except at the processor. What do you think?

Hard to tell...

Probing points on a logic board only works when you know the circuit. Of course you have a degree in electronics ;-} So you know what he was poking. He could be right or just flimflamming you.

Frankly, I like working with the simplest of tools. Leveraging what the system offers for diagnostics.

Haha, you're right. I don't know anything about logic boards so it is very likely he was just trying to fleece me. I'll do the battery thing and let you know. I highly appreciate you spending your time to help me out, Dan.

I got the tools today and opened it up. Disconnected the battery, pressed the power button for a minute and then connected the charger. The light on it was amber but the device did not boot up. I repeated it twice, didn't turn on.

What do you diagnose from this? What do I do next?

Not good... The logic board does have an issue lets see if we can isolate out what amiss. You'll need to inspect the cable connections as well as look for any damage. Reference this iFixit guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Logic Board Replacement as well as use the images in Step 18 & 19 in MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Teardown to compare. What areas look bad either staining or corrosion damage.
