Can somebody recommend a lightweight linux distro for my device?

I’m almost done fixing up an old Macbook Unibody A1342. I’m going to install a lightweight Linux distro on the device because while I was fixing it, I decided to install a 128GB SSD (which has no OS installed onto it) to speed up the device. Any suggestions?

Terminal/server editon would be lightest as there is no Desktop (unless one adds one to the server edition anyways). KDE desktop with all it's bells and whistles would be the heaviest.

Desktop choice is purely user preference. Suggest you download and try various ones via using an ISO file and bootable usb stick (or install them all to the SSD and then pick which to choose at boot time.)

If you are looking for a starting point then Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint maybe a good choice. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and Debian and Ubuntu is based on Debian releases. They all have various desktop flavors available; Linux Mint has their own too called Cinnamon (which I am using right now).

With 4 Gigs of memory, KDE is the only one that may give you some slowdown; again it depends entirely on what software is running by the user.

Might want to check out https://distrowatch.com/ which has loads of info and all the web addresses for the numerous linux distributions.

What are the specs? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

by

@jessicapfawkes I suspect it is 32 bit. The device was made in 2010.

What are you planning to do with this? You could turn it into a chromebook:

I believe it's compatible, but I'll check the list.

Chosen Solution

Have you tried turning it into a chromebook? Neverware has a pretty decent version, and also gives instructions on how to do the install on a mac.

I'm getting the logic board for this macbook in the mail pretty soon. If this OS works well on it I'll accept your answer (: Thanks!

Can I run this on a USB stick? I need to see the functions before I install it.

Here is a link for lightweight linux systems. Although the list states Atom processors, these distributions will have other versions.
