Vibration rattles and lacks complex patterns after Taptic Engine swap.

My Taptic Engine was going out on my 8+ so I ordered another for when it actually finally kicked the bucket. Replaced it yesterday with no issues. After turning on my phone though, the vibration makes this really loud metallic-ish buzz that is very audible. In addition, I cannot use any of the custom vibration patterns that are normally allowed. When my phone rings, it buzzes only once at the very beginning.

Has as anyone experienced this? I want to take it out and fiddle with it but I installed a new seal as well and only bought one of those.

first thing, try a hard reset. (press volume up, volume down, then hold power button until apple logo then release.)

if this doesn't work then try reseating the vibrate connector, if that doesn't work then you may need to transfer the data from the old vibrate to the new one using a eprom data transfer tool.

if that doesn't work then try a new vibrate and lastly a new charge port flex.

The hard reset didn't work, and I'm going to see about reseating the piece when I get home this evening. I'll just have to roll without the assembly adhesive for a while I guess.

My next step after that will be to see if I can get a warranty replacement from iFixit.

I'm not really sure on how to transfer vibration data from one engine to another, and I don't have an eprom data transfer tool so I will have to do a bit of research and purchase what I need if the replacement doesn't work.

Thank you for the information.

Hi Ryan

Most likely your replacement taptic engine is not a good part. I would try to get an OEM pulled from working iPhone part and be sure to secure all three screws tightly (I would even add a tiny bit on glue to the threads).

Best of luck!

This was my first thought. I've replaced taptic engines before and never had issues like this. Unfortunatley, this is the first one I've replaced on my own device so it is a bit painful.

I see that these parts are Lifetime Warranty from iFixit, so I might see if I can get a replacement.

Thank you for your insight.
