Boot Loop after attempted GPU fix

After 7 years of service my A1342 stopped working. The machine powered on with fan spin and plays the apple chime. I slowly ruled out all other problems, like backlight and inverter and found that the GPU had let go when an external monitor gave no output.

I disassembled the laptop and held a heat gun over the GPU at about 150 degrees c for 5 minutes. This appeared to work as the surface of the GPU has some scoring on it that disappeared after the procedure.

Now after powering the machine the boot chime repeats constantly and after a few times, it gets choppy with no screen output. The activity light is solid throughout this time.

I’ve been looking all over for a fix for this and have had no luck finding one.

Someone help me please, thanks.

I recently had a run-in with a similar GPU problem with a 2011 MBP. After doing some research, it seems that the soldering technique used at the factory was pretty inefficient for long-term use on certain 2011 and earlier MacBooks. I tried everything I could, but, to no avail. I can’t find any info about your model of MacBook and if the CPU has any onboard graphics or not, but you can check out my thread Green and Blue Screen of Death?

For cost efficiency, I would suggest buying an identical system off eBay and just stealing the motherboard, or just putting your drive into a newer machine. Also check out craigslist, which I have had some luck when it comes to old mac stuff.

It may be a little off topic, but I finally went to the dark side and built myself a Hackintosh because I’m tired of buying the expensive apple hardware that is virtually impossible to upgrade. It was a big investment but my money will go much farther than a new $3000+ MBP. I’d highly recommend it with the increasing price tags.
