Water damage to battery or port

Hi

I dropped my phone in water like a week ago but at first didn’t think much of it, I could charge it back to full no problem. However my headphone jack was stuck in headphone mode but after cleaning it out it worked again. Sometimes my screen touch wouldn’t work but turning it off/on (not a full restart) fixed the problem. However that night I tried charging it again but I got the charging icon but it wasn’t getting any fuller. So I backed it up via cabel to my pc which to my suprise still worked nicely. I then could still use it for a couple of days without a problem but couldn’t charge it up. So it slowly died, when I plugged it in it still had like the red dead battery icon so it was ‘charging’ but it wasn’t.

What is my best bet replace the battery or the charging port, the inside looked fine and is there a way to check if it is the lightning port or the battery ? by checking the voltage on the connectors ?

Thx for reading

With water damage, you have to decontaminate the logic board before doing anything else.

Not every water-damaged phone is recoverable and depending on the kind of liquid (salty, dirty, filthy), sometimes the success rate is quite low. That said, IMHO, it's always worth a try otherwise we are just piling up the e-waste.

The water is inside the phone, on the logic board and under the shields, even under the IC's. The real problem is the mineral deposits that can cause short circuits or the corrosion that is taking place as the water evaporates. Leaving the power on the device accelerates the process. The longer you let a phone sit in rice, the more time you are giving corrosion to damage your logic board. The saltier or harder the water is, the more damage will occur. The water needs to be displaced, not evaporated.

The proper way treat a wet phone is to do the following:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

You should also replace the battery if it has swollen. Resist the temptation to pop it to let the gas out. A compromised Li-ion battery is a fire hazard. If the device appears to power up but behaves erratically, then use a tool like 3uTools to flash the firmware as it may be corrupted.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no data/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the data is recoverable or not.

Hello water damage is not always immediate, if you didn’t dry the iPhone correctly and even more if you used (and charged it) when it was wet you will get in trouble.. bring it to a specialist shop for evaluation.

My experience with wet phone is that battery screen and touch id don’t like water.

good luck

I could bring it to a phone repair shop but is et even worth it ? will cost me 100+ euro and I can get a refurbished for like 160 or so, maybe I can buy a iphone 7 for 250. Am just looking for an ez fix

It could be an easy fix or could require micro-soldering. Like mentioned earlier most reputable shops have a no fix/no fee policy. It would be worthwhile to go to one of these shops and at least get a price for the repair before you give up on the device.
