Upgraded my broken SSD, is there a way to install OS over Internet?

Out of nowhere my early 2013 Macbook pro 13” retina stopped working. I tried recovery options but nothing worked so took it to Apple’s genius bar. They tried everything and concluded that it, for whatever reason, my SSD was dead and needed to be replaced but that it would be more than £1000 if Apple did it so I was better off doing it myself. Note: by this point they had wiped my original hard drive.

I bought the SSD they recommended and replaced it without issue. They advised me to boot from recovery when I powered up, connect to my wifi network and then install the OS from utilities menu. The problem I’m having is that when I go to install the OS (it’s only offering me Mountain Lion) and it asks me to select the drive I wish to install it on, there’s no drive.

When I go to disk utilities to try and format the drive, name it etc. I see disk0, Mac OS X Base System. When I click ‘image’ I can also see a remote disk. Most of the options to erase, partition, restore etc are shaded out unselectable.

I don’t have TimeMachine but that doesn’t seem to be selectable either. Everything I’ve read suggests I need to manually install the OS off a USB device but I don’t have a copy/quite understand what that entails.

Do you have access to a second Mac system which also has a Thunderbolt connection so you can connect yours to the other (Target Disk Mode).

I ran into a similar problem when I was upgrading my 2012 MacBook pro. I was trying to reinstall the OS but could not see the disk when I went to select where I wanted the OS to be installed to. I ended up replacing the ribbon cable for the HD/SSD and that solved the problem.

@coulman - Yes thats a common issue in the older unibody systems.

The retina models have a connector mounted directly on the logic board for the blade SSD. So there's not cable to deal with here.

Hilary, when u are on the installer screen,

Go to disk utility from the utilities section

Format your ssd as GUID partition and apple journaled ( IMP: this is your ssd format)

Now format your ssd partition (one you see below the name of your ssd) AND format it as APFS.

Now your installer will see the disk

No need to " install the OS off a USB device (make bootable os installer on a USB device) - the already available and achieved OS net install will well do.

If you got a spare external hard drive / SSD on a USB case or at least 16 or 32 GB USB stick -- you can install the said available macOS (mountain lion) and then proceed to boot from the freshly installed external. Once there the system profiler (system report in later os versions) will show whatever storage is recognized.

I would have suggested starting with diagnostics (support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731 ) though the codes produced from the net diagnostics are so cryptic as to be barely usable - still one may get an answer that is usable in some cases.

Additionally:

The SSD module is Apple proprietary form though in essence - a SATA one - so a cheap adapter can be bought in eBay to transform the internal/proprietary into a SATA connected and thus usable in some external usb form.

As usual - in any contacts - there are two sides being connected together - if you got 2 devices plugged in a socket that are not working -- I will at least be wary that the socket may be the bad one instead (the logic board) . This without a known-good part may be untestable....
