Touch ID and home button not working

I have just completed a LCD Display replacement on an iPhone 7. I successfully transferred over the original home button. I have checked both the button, and the connector, and there are no damages to either. Even after this repair, this is still not working. I have also taken this to a well known mobile repair shop to see if they could diagnose the issue for me, and they are in the same boat as I am. Has anyone else come across this, and if so, how did you get around this?

“I have checked both the button, and the connector, and there are no damages to either.”

Obvious and physical damage, perhaps, but not-obvious and/or electrical damage, probably. The home button on the iPhones are absurdly delicate. Too much heat while softening the adhesive, for example, can roast the touch IC.

You may also want to check the connection. The 7 has a tiny gasket around the connectors to help with the water resistance and it’s too easy for that gasket to get pinched inside the connectors when plugging them back in, which the phone would interpret as a damaged assembly.

When I was first working on phones I had trouble getting the home button connected correctly on the iPhone 8 Plus. Both the 7 and 8 lines are very similar and the home buttons connect exactly the same. For me the problem was that I did not have the connector plugged in correctly even though it appeared to be. Another explanation is that the home button extender cable on the new screen is not working. Did the repair shop you took it to try a new screen?

After checking the home button for physical damage I would try reconnecting the home button then I would try a new screen. If that doesn’t work then it may sadly mean that your home button is broken. In that case you will either always have to use a digital home button or replace your phone. There are also Bluetooth home buttons available however I’m not sure how good they work. If you can not get your original home button working you will also loose Touch ID.

How did you get the connectors plugged in correctly? I'm experiencing the same thing - the connector on the replacement screen is slightly different, enough to make the connector on the home button assembly not stay connected to it. I verified that the home button assembly is working by plugging it back into my cracked screen.

What I do is place a spudger on the ribbon cable under the LCD. There is a little gap there and that seems to always place the connector where I need it to be.

There are 2 possible problems…

1- the connector to the screen and the home button isn’t connected correctly… this generally happens when the aftermarket Home button connector isn’t perfectly in the right position, thus leading to a crooked connection

2- the actual home button receiver (female connector) connector from the screen is broken…

is the replacement screen an aftermarket or a genuine OEM Apple display?

It’s third party - from ifixit

It’s number 2.I will explain it and you can verify. There is two different designs and I don’t know how all these so called high rep people on here don’t know this but let me continue.

2 screen designs

1. Genuine display

On this display the connections (lcd, digitizer home button female connection are all fused together)

So a home button not working fault is very rare it’s usually either from water damage to the phone or the glass on the button gets broken and the system shuts down.

(Design #2 cheap)

The above mentioned parts are not integrated but instead soldered together and its ugly next time you get in the phone pull the thick part of the ribbon cable back and youll see what im talking about. The problem was the cheap A** Screen.
