Is logic board interchangeable?

I have a 2014 5K iMac, and while it’s working fine, I’m out of SSD space, so looking to upgrade it. While in there, I was thinking of going to a faster logic board - the 2017 uses faster RAM, has faster CPU, and has 4 PCIe lanes so can run the SSD at 4x (over 2GB/s) vs. mine which is maxed out just over 500MB/sec.

Will a 2017 (or 2015) logic board fit and drive the display?

Wow! A lot of change and cost for the slight improvement you would get. The cheaper direction would be to buy a new system (new or even used). Don’t forget the 2017 model boards and faster x4 blade SSD’s are being sold at a premium!

You won’t get the brighter (NITS) display the newer model has or TrueTone either.

Frankly, I don’t even know if the older display would even work with the newer logic board or if all of the connections & mounts are the same.

Price difference IS substantial - $2700 for new one (with 1TB storage) vs. maybe getting $1200 for my 2014 iMac. And I would argue that 2GB/sec vs. 500MB/sec read/write speed would be noticeable and substantial.

Your further points…that’s pretty much what I’m asking: Do the connectors of the 2014 match up from the 2015-2017 iterations?

How about doing some pricing on the logic board and the x4 SSD see what you can find.

Already done - $200-$250 for a 1TB NVMe; $400-$500 for logic board

Nope! The logic board you want is this one TheBookYard - iMac 27" Retina 5K Logic board, 4.2GHz i7 QC, 575 4GB (17) $570 USD and needs to be exchanged with a bad logic board of the same series! The best I could find is over $800 USD from my source in China and it an untested board with no CPU! The Apple SSD which you require for a 1 TB BeetsTech - 1TB SSPOLARIS SSD (661-03563) is $927 USD. Aprox $1,727 total

You still have the risks if it will even work with your display iMac 27" Retina 5K LCD Panel & Front Glass Assembly (17) which new is $1,025 USD. Aprox $2,752 with display added.

Apple makes this almost impossible to do at this point in time maybe in a year you might be able to get a used board from a parts system. It won't be as cheap as what you think.
