Is Samsung SSD 970 EVO NVMe M.2 2TB compatible with iMac 27 late 2012?

I Have iMac 2012 (Late) Core i7 3.4 GHz 27-inch (13,2), planing to upgrade to SSD, for video editing, I need the best SSD compatible with my system in the market, any recommendations? My current Apple HDD is gone very slow.

Apple uses a custom SSD design which is different than the M.2 standard. So the bottomline here is the Samsung 970 EVO PCIe/NVMe SSD won’t work in your system. Here’s a good reference on the Apple SSD’s The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

As it turns out Samsung was contracted to make the custom Apple SSD’s and here is the drive you’ll want 768GB SSD It’s the largest blade mSATA SSD your system will support. Here’s the guide you’ll need to follow to install it iMac Intel 27" EMC 2546 Blade SSD Replacement

Sorry your system can’t support the newer PCIe/NVMe drives.

If you really need this much storage your other option is to replace the 3.5” HDD with a larger 2.5” SSD drive. The prices for SATA SSD’s has dropped quite a lot and you can pickup a 2 TB or even a 4 TB without needing to rob a bank.

The last option is to forgo the internal drive and just go with an external Thunderbolt RAID drive.

If you really want more performance than what SATA offers internally you’ll need to upgrade to a newer iMac which supports PCIe/NVMe blade drives. Take the time to review the guide I linked above for more details.

Do you play Russian roulette? Not a very safe game is it. Sadly, that's the game you're playing here.

Using funky adapters is not my thing and I've seen to many messed up SSD's from them.

The issue is CRC's these are read/write errors that cause the system to cycle constantly trying to write the given data block to the SSD. Over time the block becomes bad from wear. The bottom line the SSD wears out prematurely!

In a MacBook Pro it's easy to get to, the amount of work on an iMac to get to it is quite extensive. Stick with the real SSD .

No it will not be compatible

A1419 late 2012 its compatible with M.2 NGFF SATA SSD like example “ KingSpec 1TB 2242 M.2 SSD NGFF “ only you get around 480 Mb\s due to the motherboard capabilities

A1419 late 2013 its compatible with M.2 Nvme + Adapter + your drive samsung 970 evo or adata 8200 pro. But only will work to around 900 Mb\s due to the motherboard capabilities.

Newer iMacs late 2015 can handle to 1500 Mb\s

2017 and 2019 you can get of course faster speed with your same drive.

But one can use https://www.akitio.com/expansion/thunder... for connecting external NVME ssd to iMac and use clover bootloader on USB flash or internal HDD/SSD for booting from NVME SSD!
