Mode Control Motor (Blend Door Actuator) stuck on 1 mode

2000 Honda Accord 2.3L LX Sedan with 199,500 miles

My Mode Control Motor is stuck on 1 mode, blowing on my face. When a different mode is selected, the motor makes a clicking sound. Here is a link to a video I created of what’s going on: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNg...

The following link does a great job explaining where the motor is located: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjclEh9p...

I removed and opened up the motor to clean the contacts and apply dielectric grease as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWcWUlbk...

Does anyone have any guesses what could be causing this issue? Motor needs to be replaced? A door is stuck/jammed somewhere?

I could not find ANY motor replacements from O’riellys, AutoZone, AdvancedAutoParts, RockAuto, or such. I found a motor from Honda, but it’s $205. However, Ebay has them used for $50.

UPDATE:

SOLVED: Replaced Ac Heater Control Module (Honda Part No.: 79600-S84-A01ZA)

5 years ago my Ac Heater Control Module went out. To fix this, I jumped the positive side of C1 to the input leg of the 78dl05:

https://www.driveaccord.net/threads/heat...

A couple days ago my Ac Heater Control Module went out again (no led’s would turn on, no response at all). The dealership wanted about $300 for the part. Ebay has them used for about $90. I checked my local pull-a-part and saw that 2 2000 Honda Accord’s had been brought in in the past couple weeks. After checking about 6 cars in the yard, I found a car that clearly didn’t have the original control module installed. The plastic was a bleach white compared to my original which was a discolored yellow. And it felt more sturdy. Best of all, pull-a-part charged me $17.61 for the part!

Replacing the Ac Heater Control Module fixed my blend door issue and my Ac Heater Control Module issue for $17.61!

Hi @parker_ ,

Can’t see it to well but it appears that there has been (is still?) arcing, across some of the the contacts in the assembly.

Are the contacts still as shown in the picture or clean as seen in the video you linked?

If they are still as shown in the 2nd picture, the set of contacts (shown in the picture from the bottom of the picture up) have been “joined” together and they need to be carefully separated (metal fingernail file perhaps) and cleaned so that there is no connection between them (at the burnt end anyway)

Also when finished cleaning them ensure that there is enough contact “pressure” by bending the contacts slightly upwards so that they will be exerting pressure on their mating contact when the cover is replaced, thereby ensuring a good connection

Here’s an image to show where I mean.

Thank you @jayeff for the response. I did gently wipe off the top of the contacts to remove the dark colored grease, but I did not clean under the contacts or in between them. Tonight I'll get some q tips and fishing line to make sure the black gunk is removed. Hopefully that's my issue and I'll post my response afterwards. Thanks!

@jayeff I “flossed” the black grease away from all the contacts until they look good as new. Still no luck. Any other ideas guesses?

Hi @parker_ ,

Can only suggest that you ensure that the contacts are making good contact with the contact strips which are segmented to "step" the motor to the next (or previous position), that's why I said to lever them up a bit so that when the top is put back on the strips will press down on the contacts.

When replacing the top ensure that the contact strips are going to touch at least 2 of the contacts. The strip closest to the centre looks like it is designed to be in contact all the time whilst the next ones counting out provide the move to the next position (or back to the previous) motion.

I am assuming that these strips are also clean and bright and not broken at all ;-)

You could also try gently turning the motor gear wheel by hand to see if the motor rotates at all. Be very gentle as I don't know if it is a stepper motor or not.

>>>>>>>>> Do not force it if it doesn't want to turn. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

If you can rotate the motor, (remember the position of the main gear wheels as you don't want to put them out of position when you go to put it back together - mark them somehow as to their original position) then try:

1. check if the other two gears shown in the picture rotate smoothly for at least 1/2 of a full turn, first one way then back the other way as the motor gear is being turned, simulating moving the directional flap first one way and then back again

2. with it re-assembled and with the gears stepped to different positions so that different contacts come into play, you could try using an Ohmmeter to check for continuity through the motor from the connection pins i.e. in on one pin out on the other, It will be trial and error to see if there is a path but you may be able to work it out.

Thank you for the response @jayeff . The contacts are in great condition and I have made sure to slightly bend them upwards to ensure good contact on the strips. I have checked that the other gears turn smoothly. And the motor does continue to turn when given the chance.

I have not ensured that the contacts are touching at least 2 of the strips on the top when I place the top down.

So, I believe my issue with setting the top down in the correct position, or my problem is not this assembly.

I'll try setting the top down many different ways and respond again.

@jayeff I purchased a used motor off Ebay and hooked it up. Same issue. I can manually move the doors that the motor is supposed to move and I don't find any resistance (as far as the doors being stuck). I going to return the used part and purchase another one just in case.

Right now (which might end up being the permanent fix), I can use my hand to manually move the lever to open different doors to control where it blows out. I live in Louisiana so I just leave it blowing ac on my face.

You need to replace the mode control motor.

I'm having trouble finding a replacement (not $200 from Honda) besides used from Ebay. Would you have any suggestions on where else I could search for the part?
