MacBook Pro Operated in Cold Air

I just noticed when I plug my MacBook Pro ( 15" mid 2012).

It boots from 500GB SATA SSD and has a secondary Hard Disk ( non-SSD).

When I plug it in, it automatically attempt to boot, but shuts down; and then it makes constantly very faint clicking sound!

when It is on the battery and start it while press "option' key, it goes up to showing my boot options ( disk, Macintosh HD, CD-Rom, Bootcamp windows). But then it does not turn on for few hours, until I repeat the same thing!

My poor MBP was working for around 8 hours in the cold weather ( 32-50 degree Fahrenheit).  I suspect it has something to do with its battery or the SSD or the HDD! When I press on the battery button ( on the side ), all the 7 little LED lights up. should I assume the battery is functional? It is obviously non-removable one.

I did manage to get the backup using the Time machine last week and the fan was working fine!

If I buy and install a new SSD with the same specifications will that work?

I just checked the logic board and it looks pretty clean! I also checked the thermal paste it OK.  I did apply it last week. Please see the images for the front and back of the logic board.

Update (12/28/2018)

I did power it on without the keyboard. Same issue. The clicking noise is back on. I decided to open it up and see the power assembly. It seemed there are stains on it. I cleaned it up with air spray. Here are the pictures of that:

I would like to do a short power-on pads on logic board. But I don't know where they are! Do you know what conductive tool(s) I can use to do that, please?

Spontaneous startup when plugged means the board doesn’t see a battery and the faint clicking sound is usually made by a faulty mosfet. If you have charging leds the battery should be functional, but you probably have a failure with the charging circuit which shares the same IC producing the main power line. A Ssd replacement would likely make no difference, you’ll need someone into component level repairs to take care of the logic board. You may try disconnecting battery and try to run off without it, just to see if this way the Mac works normally, but of course it wouldn’t help solve your issue.

I disconnected the battery and tried to run off without it. It does not turn on. But when power cord is connected to MBP, it makes a faint click repeatedly; however, when I press on the power button it clicks faster ( doubles the tempo)!

I also noticed a ribbon cable underneath logic board was folded and bent (it is near the batter). Here are the pictures of the ribbon cable! Maybe that is causing all the errors!

Thank you very much.

@chikitin That unfortunately doesn't improve the picture and confirms my initial suspects of a probably faulty charging circuit. Not much you can do on a do it yourself basis as such faults require specialized care.

Ok! Now after I straightened the ribbon underneath! after I plugged it in, the MBP booted completely! Everything was fully functional!

I decided to restart it to see if it works! But now, the clicking sound is completely gone and but the MBP does not turn on. What about now?

I did SMC reset, that does not work either (the little light on the MagSafe adapter does not change colors ). I should have ran maybe Apple Hardware test something instead of restart!

Thank you again.

Based on the information it does sound like a logic board / charge circuit problem.

The flex cable in the pictures shown will be the trackpad cable I believe, and on this model is unlikely to cause that kind of issue.

One troubleshooting step I will try is to power on the laptop without a keyboard, you should be able to do this with an 85 Watt Magsafe charger.

I would recommend finding a shop that does logic board repairs to look at it - the 2012 15” is a laptop that I would still try to repair.
