iPhone 6S - No Service Issue (Probably Hardware Related)

I have an iPhone 6S which I recently replaced the screen for. The screen replacement went fine and the phone functioned normally with the phone getting signal normally. Then a couple of days later upon reinserting the SIM card again from my other phone, I got the ‘No Service’ in the top left corner even though there was signal in the area I was currently in.

The IMEI is still showing when I type in *#06# so I think the Baseband CPU IC is not the issue. I’ve tried all the basic fixes:

  • Reset the network settings multiple times
  • Full factory reset
  • Updating to iOS 12 from iOS 11.4.1
  • Updated carrier settings (although I initially ignored it when I was prompted but updated after the problem arose)
  • Rocked the phone back and forth on my legs 5-10 times to resit the antenna. This gave me 1 bar for about a minute before going back to No Service
  • Reconnected the antenna cables on the top side of the logic board
  • Replaced the cellular antenna
  • Reinserting the SIM card multiples times
  • Restarting + Hard resets lots of times
  • Addressed time + date issues
  • Toggled airplane mode multiple times

Also the gyroscope is slightly off, the compass doesn't turn and the level doesn’t work, but the screen rotates just fine. I’m not sure how relevant this is though.

I’ve concluded that it has to be a hardware issue as I’ve tried all the software fixes. The only thing I haven’t changed that could be related is the dock connector of which the lightning port and the headphone jack are slightly flaky. The water indicator is also red but everything else apart from the gyroscope is working.

I’m not sure what to do now as I’ve exhausted all the potential basic possibilities. Is there anything else that I could try? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the key here is red water indicators. After a spill sometimes the device works for a certain amount of time that can be weeks or even months but parts that have residues left drying in place will eventually fail. In every case of liquid damage the board needs to be taken literally apart, shields included, and decontaminated with ultrasonic cleaning. You seem to have tried every possible troubleshooting out of a workbench thus I believe you’ll need some professional help from someone into microsoldering who can diagnose and repair. Water damaged phone are unfortunately the worst to work with.

Is there anyway I can diagnose what is causing this issue without removing ICs or things like the CPU and baseband shield? I don’t mind doing board level repairs as I’ve done it before, however I would like to confirm the diagnosis before I take off any shields or do any irreversible things.

@nightraven3142 The only IC that can be tested without taking the board apart is Tristar so far. There's no way I know of testing baseband issues without getting into circuits probing.

iPhone series like iPhone6 ,6plus and 6s have most common problem that i fix with the hardware.There is no sign of damage in board too.This problem usually happen after forcefully dropped.I have solved that issues that is the fault of Baseband (Modem) chip which pin is connect to network section in that cases No Service problem shows.

Hello. Have you verified the antenna connector(on the board) is not bent or damaged? Once,I very carefully connected the antenna to my laptop WiFi card. It snapped on wrong and bent the connector. This can happen.

Ive heard that some screws have to do with using the top part of the iPhone frame as an antenna. I don’t believe the 1 bracket with 4 screws covering the lcd connector have anything to do with that though. Did you remove anything else at the time of the screen replacement?

Are all the screws definitely in the correct place? Sometimes long screw damage occurs…

if if you check on the antenna connector on the logic board,you should make sure the pin in the middle is sturdy…just use a small screw driver and press it super gently.

Now now I doubt this would work,but did you try to fully reinstall the os from dfu mode? I don’t think upgrading the iOS fully reinstalls the os.

By the way,have you tried a different SIM card? Just curious.

Did you have any magnets near the iPhone?

it can be a bad component,or sim reader. It’s odd that your gyro is acting up too.

By the way,it took me FOREVER in the past to find this out. But the accelerometer is what recognizes the screen rotation,and basics with racing games. The gyro is a bonus. It allows precision with a 360 degree axis.

My bro had the same thing on his iPhone 6s after he threw it. Was the gyro working after the screen replacement? Since your screen was cracked(I’m assuming cracked not just defective),if you dropped it,it could have knocked the actual gyro loose,or a component that has to do with it.

Thanks so much for you help. I'm pretty sure that the antenna connections on the logic board side are fine but i'm not sure about the dock connector and speaker side. The only screw that is slightly loose is one of the 3 holding the home button bracket but that is only loose by a couple of threads. I need to try another SIM card but if that doesn't work I will probably swap the dock connector and the speaker.

Swapping those shouldn’t do anything.

The one loose screw is not the cause

If you dropped it when the screen cracked,it could have loosened a component,and caused an inconsistency with the cellular. If it happened to come loose when you took the sim out and eventually put it back in,since it was loosened already from the drop,it could be the culprit.

You should try another SIM card too. If you have a friend,TRY HIS.

Most likely it’s a component issue then.

Swapping the SIM card didn't help. I'm looking at getting some external help in diagnosing the issue.
