Macintosh HD isn't visible in Disk Utility after trying to update OS X

Hello, I have some serious issue with my 15" Macbook Pro late 2013 i7 2.3, and I'm looking for help. I've attached all screenshots that could be helpful and I mention them in my post:

Everything was fine with my laptop until I finally decided to update my OS from El Capitan to Mojave. After my computer rebooted and started installation process, an error appeared that said there is no disk to install new system. I opened recovery mode with command + R, and disk utility showed only Apple disk image with OS X Base System, that has 1,3GB (screenshot #1). My main Macintosh HD 500GB drive was not visible. Therefore I couldn't reinstall OS X by myself. I Googled some solutions, runned 'fsck' in a single mode (screenshot #2). I reseted PRAM and SMC but nothing helped. So I took my laptop to service point where technician formatted my disk and checked if it is damaged. His diagnose was that disk is fine, but EFI is corrupted and he suggest replacing a whole motherboard. I decided to take my laptop back home for now and try to look for less radical option.

And now... A plot twist! What changed after visit in service point. When I run my laptop in normal mode turning on the power button, a blinking folder icon with a question mark appears. When I run in command + R Internet recovery mode, there's some new stuff happening: my 500GB HD disk is now visible for a while in Disk Utility! (screenshot #3 & #4). But when I try to verify or repair disk, I get errors (screenshot #5 & #6), and after that disk dissapears from the list on left side of the screen. It's only visible shortly after opening the Recovery Mode for a first time. Same thing happens when I'm running Terminal as first thing and type 'diskutil list', it's visible (screenshot #7). But when I exit Terminal and try that again, it dissapears.

Please, help me, did that guy from service was right and there is nothing else I can do than just replacing a whole motherboard? Or there is some hope? I'm not a very technical person, but I appreciate every hints and help!

Do you have access to a second Mac? If you do you’ll need to connect your MacBook Pro to is using Target Disk Mode so you can reformat your drive. Reference: How to use target disk mode to move files to another computer

Unlike the recovery partition’s Disk Utility we need to run it from an external drive as the full drive needs to be rebuilt.

If you don’t have access to a second Mac which you can connect to your other Mac you’ll need to make a OS installer drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive

The other possibility is the SSD drive is gone. Often times I see this type of failure when the drive was too full so the drive has worn-out. The rule of thumb is to leave some space free so the OS and its Apps have some space to run. In your case with a 500 GB drive that would be 1/4 free or 125 GB When you start using this space you run the risk of over wearing your drive. This is only an issue for boot drives not other drives.

This very same thing happened on my 15 month old macbook air running Catalina. the SSD was only about 25% full, so plenty of space. I would like to download a bootable copy of Catalina in order to copy over to USB stick in the hope of recovering Macbook Air. Problem then says that download couldn't continue as my 2nd mac is not compatible. i would not install Catalina on my 2nd mac as its old and is not apfs . i only want to download to create a bootable USB. Any ideas would be appreciated.

@ngl3 - Do you have any friends with a Mac that can help you? Of course this is not the best time to ask.

is it possible to recover data from an over stuffed internal drive?

Just like water, you can't over fill a gallon bottle ;-}

But you can run into lack of space for the OS to load. You'll need to boot up under a different drive to then back up your stuff and then reformat the drive.

Just had this issue myself on a 2012 Mac Mini, which suddenly locked up completely and couldn’t restart. When I rebooted off a USB, the drive had completely disappeared. Time to order a new drive. Fortunately I have performed a hard drive swap as documented in Mac mini Late 2012 Hard Drive Replacement several times and have backups of everything, making this merely annoying as opposed to fatal.

As a general practice, I always keep my OS and data on several drives, backing up to a third, and have been doing so for decades. I realise this isn’t practical for Macbooks, though.
