One AirPod keeps cutting out.

I have a daith piercing and since it isn’t healed yet I can’t wear my right AirPod at all. I’ve noticed that the one I use exclusively has problems cutting in and out. Without touching it the volume will go up and down. It doesn’t connect as reliably either. I have officially passed the one year mark and didn’t get Apple protection. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
