Can I upgrade to SSD without taking out the HD?

Dear forum friends,

I am willing to buy an upgrade kit for my iMac. I am thinking of inserting the 500 Gb SSD. My question is: do I need to take the original 3-Tb HD out, or can I run the iMac with both the new SSD and old 3-Tb HD?

Thanks

Here is what you want to do:

  • Buy this upgrade bundle form OWC, this bundle has the blade SSD which is the proper SSD you need
  • Follow the guide I linked to below, you can keep your old HDD and have a blade SSD running simultaneously

iMac Intel 27" EMC 2546 Blade SSD Replacement

The upgrade bundle from iFixit won't work because it comes with the wrong drive which could only go in the place of your current HDD. I understand you want to keep your current HDD, so the kit from OWC will be your best option because it comes with the blade SSD instead of the SATA SSD.

It appears that iFixit doesn't sell the right blade SSD for your iMacunfortunately. Again, OWC is your best bet because of the drive compatibility.

Thanks a lot!!

Do you know if IFIXIT also has a compatible bundle? OMC kit has a 20-day delay to ship.

Unfortunately, iFixit doesn't sell this SSD in a kit or without a kit. OWC is your best bet. Hope this helps!

How about this kit Aarron: iMac Intel 27" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit

It's a Crucial MX300 SSD -- or is it not a blade SSD?

Thanks again!

Unfortunately that is a SATA style SSD and the blade SSD you need is an Apple proprietary drive. Again, your best bet is OWC.

STOP!!

Atul - Sorry guy the IFIXIT drive is a 2.5” SATA drive it is NOT what you want if you also want to hold onto your current HDD.

You need a blade SSD and you need review this: The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

Even if my iMac is 2012 model?

por

Yes. Support for dual drives ended with the 2011 iMac. But you could get an external drive and plug it in via USB or Thunderbolt.

por

Uh, I disagree with this. You can have a blade SSD and a hard drive running on this Mac at the same time. This Mac may not have a optical drive but it has an SSD expansion slot on the logic board.

por

You need to show some documentation on this statement

por

A Fusion Drive is a dual drive! Its a blade SSD and a SATA HDD which you could also just run as discreet drives.
