How to find and replace ambient sensor in a Mac Pro, not MacBook Pro

My fans start on high as soon as the Mac Pro is powered on. I believe that this may be caused by the ambient sensor. I purchased a new one, but cannot find where it is in the Mac Pro.

• How do I find the sensor?

• Do I need to do anything else before replacing the sensor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Shawn

@astintyme exactly what did you purchase? What model is your Mac Pro 2006? 2008?

I have three Mac Pros:

• Mac Pro "Eight Core" 3.0 (2,1) 2007

• Mac Pro "Eight Core" 3.0 (2008)

• Mac Pro "Six Core" 3.33 (2010/Westmere)

It's the first one, the 2007 model, that I'm trying to fix. The other two work fine. An electrical surge after a storm when the power came back on caused the first Mac Pro to randomly shut down while the fans continually ran very high. It came down to me thinking either the logic board or the power supply were at fault, but some resent research got me thinking that the ambient sensor may be the culprit. I thought that I'd give it a go and see if replacing the sensor might fix it. The problem is I can't find a replacement guide on ifixit or anywhere else. It also has been a few years since I did any repair work on Macs, so I'm a little rusty.

What I need is a photo of the place where the ambient sensor connects to the logic board, but I can't find one.

Solução escolhida

@astintyme this will depend on your model and which sensor.

Since you spoke about the ambient sensor, I would think you are talking about the Intake Ambient Temperature Sensor Apple part number 922-7731. That board is located on the inside left corner of the top panel, above the optical drive carrier:

@astintyme the sensor connects via a cable to the logic board. Here is an image of where (right below the HDD connector) and how it connects. Follow the yellow outline
