On my base phone, if I use the speaker phone, I can hear the dial tone and talk.
If I try to pick up the receiver and talk, I can’t hear the other person. I also can’t hear a dial tone at the start of a call.
The cordless handset works fine. It’s only the base that I have a problem with.

Had you tried this?
Ask someone to make a call to your telephone number, pick up on the defective set.
you will not be able to hear, but try speaking on it. Does the remote caller hear your voice?
If the remote caller does not hear you, consider getting another cable to change from the base station to handset.
see if it work.
or test with another handset.
else dismantle the handset and check on the internal speaker if it is working.

Thanks so much for your response! The person I'm talking to can hear me. How would I dismantle the handset and check on the internal speaker? That sounds complicated.
I got a new cord to connect from the receiver to the base, but that didn't help. I thought it would because I can faintly hear sounds in the base, but the sounds don't come through the receiver.
Hmm, seems the plastic is being glued together, check for any screw holding.
Note: hopefully it is just the bad soldering connection, sometimes when you drop the handset, it came loose.
you might need to find a inconspicuous area to use an exact o knive, etc to perform a small incision and use some stuffs to slowly pop up the plastic.
best if you can standby a multimeter and to check to connectivity of the internal cables, speakers (ohms range) and from the jack to the internal point.
