Vertical red line on Dell monitor. Stuck Pixel?

Hello again people of ifixit,

I have a Dell S2240L monitor. One day, a vertical red line appeared on the monitor as shown in the picture. Initially, it went away on its own or sometimes a gentle press on the screen made it go away. However, it doesn't anymore.

I have tried fixing with PixelHealer, I ran it for about an hour and a half, but doesn't seem to make any progress. This line of pixels can only be changed to either red or black (as far as I know).

I have seen people suggesting to take apart and check for loose connections inside. But I don't know how to take it apart as there aren't even visible screws anywhere. I am not afraid to do so if I know how, I have disassembled other monitors before, but I don't want to break it.

It should still be under warranty when it showed this line but I have lost the warranty slip unfortunately.

Do you have any suggestions in fixing it? Or an idea how to take it apart? Thank you.

@ukim

that is not a stuck pixel and no software is going to fix this. It is a TAB error and really can’t be fixed by DIY measures. You would have to disassemble your display assembly and put some pressure on the ribbon cable that enters the LCD display right where you see the red line. That should change that line. It is where the small ribbon cable is bonded to the panel and that bond has failed. Sometimes pressure and a piece of fabric tape can hold it down for wahile and make that line disappear, but that would be temporary.

Hey, I met the same problem, limited by the money, I just want to know if this line will broad be more widely in the future?

por

It won't get broader if that's what you meant. But more lines may appear around it. I have the same problem; the first line appeared around 5 months ago and now I have 3 lines. You can fix it if you've got the time and patience . I'm going to try and fix it today.

por

@random pretty common since more of the TABS loose their adhesive. I usually try to either wedge something between the frame and the ribbon cable of the failed tab or use some cloth tape to apply pressure that way. Temporary fixes only but if it buys a year or so it's a year of money saved.

thank you, you save my day.

Hi!

As you suggested, that line is indeed a sign of a loose connection. If your monitor is still under warranty, then don't bother dismantling it yourself, Dell should fix that, even if you lost the warranty slip. You just need to find the Service Tag on that monitor (Dell has a video on how that's done: http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/05/video... ) and then type it into their support website. Then you'll get more options, one of them should be warranty & repairs or something like that:https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/...

@alexniculescu Thanks for the suggestion, however, the problem doesn't appear recently and I have already tried claiming the warranty. But Dell needs a Service Tag for that which this monitor model apparently does not come with. I had to go to the shop from which I bought but that requires my warranty slip / invoice.

Well you may not believe but after getting a red line and reading this thread I've simply pressed firmly the bottom of the monitor, right under the red line, and it got fixed. Hope it stays that way.

This didn't fix it for me, but did change the brightness and the colour, so at least confirms a loose connection - U2720Q

I laughed when I saw your comment about just pressing firmly under the redline... LoL yeah right, but I tried it just in case anyway. Instantly the vertical red line disappeared!! WOW! that's insane. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

EDIT: This is on the screen of my DELL XPS 17 laptop. I didn't even realize this thread was about an external monitor initially, but the solution works perfect for my laptop screen as well. Probably something DELL does poorly in engineering screens in general.

Just a note if I press down at the bottom edge of the monitor it does come back and disappear.... it's bizarre, almost like a red line on off switch, but it doesn't matter if I can make it go away. I have been closing and opening my monitor to fix it until now, but that was rearranging all my windows on the second monitor, so this is such a superior method!

Just wanted to provide an update. After about 9 months of using this trick, it still works every time on my DELL XPS 17 (G1). The redline actually comes up less now than it did back then, but pressing on the bezel right under the vertical redline fixes it every time it comes up.

por

@tolgabalci it doesn't take much for the flex cable to make connection with the LCD again. Most common cause is actually corrosion. People cleaning their monitor with whatever liquid. That liquid gets under the bezel and starts to corroded the TAB bond. Glad yours is still working. Great fix!

I had the same issue, albeit with a different brand of monitor. Thought it was a loose internal connection as others have said here, but it turned out to be a loose HDMI cable at the rear of the monitor. A little wriggle and the line disappeared.

This happened to me as well. I fixed it by going to settings and resetting the selected display settings back to default!

I was getting one red vertical line. Tried changing the HDMI cable, connected to another computer, but same thing. Finally I have tried factory reset and it worked.

Thanks for the suggestions.
