Trouble migrating Photos library to external hard drive

Hello, so I am trying to migrate my Photos library to an external hard drive because I have almost no space on my mac anymore but i keep receiving the message "None of these files can be imported into your Photos library." when i try to use the external hd's Photos file.

So far I have:

  1. formatted the external to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then did Time machine to copy my hard rive onto the external.
  2. I then also (for precautionary reasons) copied my photos file and pasted it directly to the external as well. So I have 2 copies of my Photos library on my external (one from time machine and one i put manually).
  3. I then followed these steps on this form here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/703...
  • Quit Photos
  • Copy the Photos Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
  • Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
  • Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

When I went to test it from my external I got the message:

"None of these files can be imported into your Photos library."

I have no clue what to do now, and I have a strong fear of loosing all my pictures, therefore I am being extra cautious before deleting the file from my hard drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you!
