Right fan not working (0rpm)?

Hey Guys,

I have a Macbook Pro 3,1 (Late 2007 2.2Ghz Non-Unibody).

The 'Right Fan' of the laptop is not working. The Left fan is running at around 5900 to 6100 under normal circumstances.

I took the computer to Apple store (for an unrelated incident with my battery which was under warranty) and asked them to check the fan. They said the fan is not working and would cost $45 +Tax (Canadian) to get it fixed but they would have to order it and would take 3 - 5 days to get it fixed (I would be without any computer during that time).

Now, a day after that the right fan mysteriously started working going upto 2000 rpm but was extremely noisy (to the fact I can not use it in class). After couple of days, the fan again stopped working (0 rpm, no sign it ever worked).

My question is whether there is dust in the fan which is preventing the fan from running or whether the fan is fried.

I would be opening up the laptop to install a hardrive in place of superdrive, so would blowing air in the fan fix the problem or, should I just go to Applestore and get the fan replaced by them.

I have already ordered the dust blower found at Dust Blower so, what are your suggestions.

Second, if I replace the super drive and check the fan and it still doesnt work, would Apple create any problems replacing it at that time. This would be the first time I would be opening up the Macbook by myself (all previous repairs were done by an authorized service provider).

Thanks for the help (and sorry for the long description)

Those fans do go out. Here's how to do it, it's a moderate difficulty job: MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 and A1260 Right Fan Replacement

Here's the part: [produto vinculado ausente ou desativado: IF185-077]

Just take your Book outside to blow it out and use short blasts of air, don't let it get to cold and have the battery out. Even with AppleCare your machine is most likely out of warranty.

Hi

Thanks for the answer. Yes the machine is out of warranty which is why there is a charge by Apple for replacing it.

But, does the fact that it started running by itself for a couple of days means that it is just dust. If so, is it better to clean (and save the money) or just replace it regardless because the fan wouldn't work as efficiently as new ones anyways.

If it makes any noise or has screeched at you at any time, replace it.

Please don't edit your original question (I DON'T HAVE A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY), just add an UPDATE to it. Your jpeg shows your left fan working to hard and no right fan working. If replacing the fan does not solve your problem, you may need to tear the machine down, clean out the vents by the heat sink and reapply thermal paste but that can wait till you've changed the fan and see how your temps are running and how comfortable you are working on your machine.
