SSD Booting SUPER slow

So i was heading to my brothers house and taking my pc with me. My PC can boot via mouse movement and i had just shut it down and accidentally bumped the mouse. So it begins to boot up but i was all ready to go and very impatient so i flipped the switch on the PSU while the windows logo was on the screen. Now every time i boot it takes 10+ minutes to get to the desktop whereas previously it would boot in 30 seconds or less. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you in advance.

Is the ssd slow in opening programs as well or just on startup?

por

Hi @king217 ,

What OS is installed in the desktop?

What is the make and model number of the desktop?

por

@jayeff It's a custom build with windows 10 installed.

@jimfixer I didn't think to check that before because once it finally boots everything runs fine but the SSD it mainly just for the OS, so i did check by going into the program files folder and opening a program and it opened up just fine so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

Hi @king217 ,

Check in Event Viewer to see if there are any obvious problems showing. (Right click Windows Start button on Taskbar and select Event Viewer link)

If nothing obvious try repairing the Win Startup using a USB Recovery drive

Boot the PC using the Win 10 USB recovery disc. (Ifyou haven't got one you can create one from any known working Win 10 PC. Go to Control Panel > Recovery > create a USB recovery disc)

You'll need a 8GB flashdrive and 40-60 minutes of time.

Once created insert it into the PC and then go into BIOS and change the boot order to USB 1st boot option, and also enable Legacy USB or CSM (don't know what you have), save the changes and restart the PC. Make sure it boots from the USB

When in WRE (Windows Recovery Environment) select Troubleshooting > Advanced > Startup repair and follow the prompts

DO NOT select Reset This PC as it will erase your data and reinstall Windows.

Hi @king217 ,

Here is a link with some suggestions to try.

There is no set order in the way to try them so work out which one to try first and then go on from there.

It may be that ultimately, you may have to save all your data and do a complete fresh install of Windows to overcome the problem. Unfortunately it happens sometimes.

@jayeff ended up reinstalling windows and that seems to have fixed it, boot time went from like 15 minutes to 15 seconds. Thanks for the help!

Check out your ssd drive speed. I used HD tune to do benchmark test on entire ssd. First 40 gigs had speed of less than 30 mb - shot up to 400 thereafter. Replaced ssd with other unit and bootup went from 2 min 13 seconds to 13 seconds. SSd had a large block of bogus memory in critical area of drive up front.

Have you tried restarting the computer?

As on Windows 8 and higher, they use a fast startup feature meaning the computer does not actually fully shut down, it more like goes into a hibernation state.

When you restart your computer it may fix the slow boot up issue as a result of doing so.

If you are running a SSD it's actually better to turn off fast startup as the differences are negligible and is better for stability reasons as well.

I would guess that the boot file is in some way corrupted it is obviously works not well so try a sfc scan to check for corrupted files This should help with the scan and the repair of any corrupt files.
