Dead, not starting up anymore

I bought a refurbished MacBook Air as my old pro was shocked by bad electrical outlet. It worked fine for a week or so, but then started freezing. People I bought it from suggested it was a battery problem and I had that replaced. It did not work, I have rebooted endless times, reset the battery and nvram and now it doesn’t even want to start in recovery mode. Should I get a new motherboard or a new ssd?

I tried the internet recovery and there is nothing from apple to fix the issue. I tried disk utility, but the hard drive does not show. I tried to reinstall mountain lion, but hard drive does not show up for installation. I have now booted it up with my hard rive from my macbook pro and that works fine, which means to me it´s not the logic board I think.

I booted the HDD from my Macbook Pro and works like a charm until I can get a new SSD for the air

@nafanua - If you still have a warranty on your system from Apple I would use it. Otherwise checkout OWC & Transcend for a replacement SSD, both offer a good product at a cheaper price than getting a used Apple SSD of the same size.

As you had power issues before you might want to look at getting a good surge suppressor or better yet a good fill-in UPS so both the surges and drop-outs get covered.

I think your spot on pretty much. Could be very much a Hard Drive problem, especially if its not a Power Supply issue. I think you have answered your own question. MOBO could be an issue but the way you describe it, the freezing phase makes it sound more like a faulty/slow hard drive! Try doing that and reply if it works!

Hi Kirsten,

Let's perform a diagnostic test that Apple provides. Performing such test will result in error codes specific parts not working. However also note that the test is not perfect, for example if the SATA connection is damaged, the hard drive will not be detected and the error code will spit out problems on the drive itself but the problem lies with the connection port. So just understand it's not a one and done test. Before you go out and replace the possible damaged parts, try to perform an internet recovery, instead of the built in recovery. If that does not work and/or performing a diagnostic test. Then very likely the logic board has an issue. Your intermittent freezing proves it's not a battery issue and could be isolated to either a logic board problem or a hard drive failure. Replacing a hard drive isn't an expensive part but a new logic board may be since I see it goes for ~$300 here on ifixit. Feel free to reply to this post if you have questions.
