Water spill, shuts off when unplugged

Block Image

Long story short, my macbook air came in contact with water. The computer shut off by itself, and it wouldn't turn back on. I left the computer upside down and in the corner for 4 days. I plugged the charger in the computer and it now lights up green and it turned on (I'm using it now as we speak) and it works great! The problem, the second I disconnect the charger it shuts off immediately. Anyone out here have any experience with this?

Lets get some more diagnostic info on whats happening. Download this great app: CoconutBattery it will allow you to see the status of your battery and the charging logic. Take a screen snapshot of the main window and paste it here for us to see Adicionar imagens a uma pergunta já existente

You should also review this Apple T/N: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters making sure both the adapters connector and systems are clean and in good shape.

Update (03/29/2018)

Well your battery is getting up there with 763 cycles. If you review this Apple T/N: Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks we can see your battery is rated for 1000 cycles. So in three or so years you've run your system hard. You may want to plug in more often not letting the battery run all the way down. When you do it often causes the battery to blister.

The good news is SMC appears to be working so its only the switching MOSFET that needs replacing on your logic board. As the battery is not switching over this is likely from the water damage.

You'll need to find someone with the micro-soldering skills and access to the part to fix this.

I know I should take care of the battery a little better, I bought this computer right before law school and I'm about to graduate, so I've really used the !&&* out of this computer. Do you know how much something like this would cost typically? And thank you so much for your time in addition to the quick response!

$200 or less

There is a very sensitive bit of battery-charging circuity, easily triggered with heat & moisture, to prevent battery explosions.

Does it show 'charging' when you are using it ?

Is it warm ?

Does it show 'charging' when its off ?

It shows that its charging and it shows 100% for the past hour, so its not going down. The light is green when off and on. It does not feel hot.

Thank you.

A few days later....

Will it boot up from the battery, without the charger ?

I presume the answer is NO, it will only start with the charger plugged in.

Which means the battery has been "terminated". ( for lack of a better term ;>)

You need a good battery to further test it.

I would take it to a repair shop, before buying a new expen$ive battery.

Hi,

I have the exact same situation as you described. But I had less patience and powered it on after two days instead of four. Here’s the screenshot from coconut Battery. It’s not looking too pretty.

Does this mean my battery is done or is it possible that if I give it another couple days to dry it might be ok?

Thanks so much.

Mike

I have the same issue and it only works when I plug it in the charger. When I disconnect, it completely shuts off. Do you suggest I get a new battery?
