Why can't I hear anything or speak to my friends with my earbuds

I used to be able to hear my games or anything from the system and talk to my friends, but now I can't hear anything or talk to my friends anymore for some reason. My earbuds work perfectly on my laptop and phone. I have tried all the ways that I found online but still nothing has worked for me. Before when I put in my earbuds, on the bottom right of the screen there was a symbol like a microphone and will turn into a headphone symbol once I put it in, but now when i put my earbuds in, the symbol doesn't change.
