Screen doing its own thing like touch disease

Hi,

I replaced a digitizer on this some time ago and the customer has come back to me saying the screen does what it wants and types like its got touch disease.

I've done a bit of research into this and I cannot see a confirmed case of touch disease on an iPad. I've cleaned the digitizer and its still acting weird, It also changed the volume on its own too. I have managed to capture it on a video (link provided)

Any ideas what it could be? I'm along the lines of this is a board issue. I suspect there is a problem with a data line or cpu where the Ipad is receiving a bunch of nonsense signals.

Thanks Brian,

This is a OEM digi thats about 3 months old. I've tried a new one and its still doing the same.

If you look at the video at on 43 seconds you'll see the volume changes like the volume buttons are not being pressed.

I suspect there is a problem with a data line or cpu where the Ipad is receiving a bunch of nonsense signals.

Have you tried testing the new one without installing it all the way? I usually take a couple of plastic pry tools or guitar picks to keep it up off the body of the iPad to test. It may be a board issue, but try that just out of curiosity.

Yeah I tested the new one without fitting it.

Ok, inspect the digitizer connector on the motherboard to see if there's any damage. I inadvertently bent a gold pin one time and had to have it repaired.

It's caused by the digitizer either going bad or the gold contacts on the bottom of the digitizer and home flex cables grounding out on the aluminum of the iPad when closed. I always buy OEM quality digitizers that have these areas pre taped. Also, there is a row of gold contacts on the connector that connects to the motherboard. Make sure those aren't exposed either, because those will ground out on the aluminum back when it's closed as well.

From your video the touch issue starts happening when you click the home button or near it. That's the area that needs to be taped off. If there is any gold exposed tape it off with Kapton tape.

It happens without pressing the home button as well. It will come off standby on its own accord as well.

I only use OEM digi's that are pre taped

I had same issue. Replaced the touch screen with original one at Apple but still the same, it touches by itself and went crazy. Brought it to local tiny Apple service and he said touch screen is fine but you need to replace the LCD. I didn’t believe it at first but Voila! In my case… it works fine until now. No more ghost touch.
