apple 922-9229 vs OWC Thermal Sensor

I've been told that the Apple part 922-9229 works just fine for replacing hard drives in iMacs from 2009-2010... and it's half the price of the OWC Digital Thermal Sensor kit which is what I've been using. Can any one tell me if this Apple part is as a good for this use?

There are three versions of the Apple Thermal sensor so depending on the original drive you have in your system it will be one of these sensor cables:

  • Hitachi Drive - Apple P/N 922-9215
  • Seagate Drive - Apple P/N 922-9216
  • Western Digital Drive - Apple P/N 922-9217

Now these cables where designed for the drives at this time point when the system was made. SSD's and many of the newer HD's don't have the header these cables connect into so one can't access the internal sensor if it has one. This is why you generally need the OWC in-line thermal sensor as it sits on the drive can to measure its temp externally. Thus, it will work on any drive 2.5" or 3.5" HDD, SSHD or SSD.

As to using the optical drive thermal sensor cable: Apple P/N 922-9229 That also works in the 2009 & 2010 models (I still prefer the OWC device). I would't use it in the 2011 or newer systems as the logic is a bit different. Most of these are from junker systems (used) so you do run the risk of getting a bad one.
