How to restore Apple TV 4K (Without USB-C)

Hey,

Usb-C port is not available on AppleTV 4k Edition.

How is it possible to connect Appletv 4k to ituens ?

I heared ,something about recovery/DFU mode over a WiFi connection

I asked this question in Official Apple community Forum, but nobody answer.

According to this link:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203028

If you see a yellow warning sign, while trying to update the software on your Apple TV 4K, contact Apple Support.

Is there any secret approach?

Best regards

I have reviewed all comments

Base on that i have two question,

1.Holding down remote Menu & Home Screen button at the same time for about 5 or 6 seconds, for soft reset is working for Apple tv 4k edition ?

2.According to your guess , we should connect the appleTV 4K to iTunes by using HDMI <-> USB cable, already there is HDMI<>USB cable on the markert (Bestbuy/Walmart,Amazon,...) , we can use them ?

And what is exact procedure for restoring the Apple TV 4K by using this cable?

I just successfully restored our AppleTV that we'd given up on with a suggestion I found here (https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/...).

The thread is archived so I can't upvote it, so spread this solution, because that Reddit thread's the only place online I was able to find it!

por

@gyffes gyffes < Thanks for your info, but that's not a real solution, we don't just want a reset it but also firmware upgrade/flash it either via cable or over WiFi. The only working solution I've read about is using the latest X-Code over WiFi, but that's only available on Macs since it's part of that eco-system. Problem is two thirds of people around the world use Windows, Linux, etc.

por

That’s a funny comment: the subject was “how to restore...?” annnnnnnd that’s what I offered in a non-OS-dependent method. In a thread on how to make chocolate, I offer a recipe, and yet you complain my method won’t convert lead to gold. Hmmm

Yeah, it’d be great if Apple hadn’t removed the USB port, but since they were trying to preclude the very thing you’re desiring, it certainly makes sense why they did it from their perspective.

As Chris Rock put it: “Ah don’t approve, but Ah unduhstaaannn’”

por

@billa.4you where did you see the procedure about using Xcode? My appletv 4K has the support.apple.com/appletv/restore error and it isn’t fixed by the procedure outlined in @gyffes message

hi - For anyone searching for an answer to this question - I just had the same problem and called apple support as instructed. They are arranging for the Apple TV to be collected and returned for repair.

I asked if there was any way to restore myself and was told no. I said that I was concerned that if, for whatever reason, I needed to restore the Apple TV after it was out of warranty that it would cost me - they said that if it was due to a software update problem then there would be no charge - even out of warranty.

I'm amazed that there is no way an owner can restore the box to factory settings - this seems like a really bad idea.

Like how dumb is Apple to remove the usb port, I mean it's used for updating, restoring, sideloading, jailbreaking etc... really Apple?! * facepalm#1 *

It's outright laughable that they have to pick up your device and replace it if something goes wrong which could be easily fixed by a dfu restore through usb. * facepalm#2 *

Per the suggestion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/...

I was able to restore ours just now, and it had been locked with "this device is managed by another service" sort of thing.

Good luck!

Here's an interesting solution I ran across on Reddit which I haven't tried yet, but might be worth a shot.

Do a soft reset by pressing and holding the Menu + Home buttons at the same time on the remote until the sleep menu comes up, and continue to hold it till it starts to reboot. As soon as it starts to reboot, press and hold the Volume Down + Play + Pause buttons at the same time till it brings up the recovery mode screen separate to the main interface. This new menu will run independently from the standard interface and uses the Internet which you have previously set up in the main interface to recover the AppleTV4K box.

This happened to me yesterday, was watching a movie when the video froze and a few seconds later the TV rebooted. Was greeted with the exclamation symbol and a URL support.apple.com/appletv/restore. I tried the power cycling trick but that didn’t work. So booked a session at the Apple Store.

The tech at the genius bar had some useful info. He said the restoration method now uses the Ethernet port. He confirmed the bootloader will try to redownload the OS via the Ethernet port. However he didn’t clarify if this was downloaded from the Internet or from the Apple Store’s LAN servers.

He plugged a Cat6 cable into the GigE port, unplugged the power cord, counted to 15, then plugged the power back in while holding Menu + Home on the remote at the same time.

Unfortunately that didn’t work either so he handed me a new ATV 4K. Luckily mine was still under warranty. But if anybody else has this happen out of warranty give the Ethernet method a try.

Only thing that worked for me was repeatedly plugging it in and then unplugging it. I would leave it plugged in until the service screen would appear, then I would unplug it. Repeated 5-6x and finally it just booted up normally, though it seems with all caches wiped (e.g. it had all the apps, but no content/images loaded).

Also have seen some people say after 5-6x reboots it may bring up a diagnostic screen where you can restore the device to factory.

I think Apple doesn't post this as an official solution because its so "inelegant." But it makes sense to have multiple restore options with the USB port removed!

My Apple TV died last night, no video and the light would keep blinking. At the Apple store today they said it’s nothing they can do about it and recommended to get a new or refurb unit.

Back home I tried a one minute power on - one minute power off repeat sequence and at the fifth one it powered up normally. Watched a couple hours shows after that and worked just fine - knock on wood.

por

Unfortunately my Apple TV died again last week any numerous attempts to resuscitate it by either repeat restarts or combination button press failed and I am now waiting for a refurb unit to arrive.

I was reading some other articles. If you installed XCode, there is supposedly an option to link the Apple TV with Xcode 9, either wirelessly or via the Ethernet port.

See this article for how to link Wirelessly.

Had the exact experience that Paul mentioned, am returning my box for update. Was told on the phone that my tvOS may not have been up to date as there apparently was something in a January update that would have allowed me to force the restore from the error screen. I mentioned that my settings are to automatically take updates so I was curious as to how I could have not gotten that.

When my new Apple 4K TV was stuck in the Reset or Restart loop and Genius bar AND Apple Teck support said it had to be replaced, and trying BOTH restart or reset failed...ALL I had to do was hold down my remote Menu & Home Screen button at the same time for about 5 or 6 seconds. My Apple 4K TV Box reset INSTANTLY and ALL my data returned!

That is what is referred to as a soft reset/force restart and that really should be the first thing that you do if there is really any issue with the Apple TV of any model. 2nd and 3rd gens you hold menu and 6 o'clock on target wheel of silver remote. The new Apple TV's are in many ways like an iOS device with the options. Except with the 4k and the idea of being able to restore manually apparently.

When I asked Apple Support about this, they told me that the USB-C to HDMI cable could be restored.

Is this really true?? And where would I be able to find such a cable USB-C to HDMI?

por

Apple should make such a cable for there newer MacBooks, so of course they’d be available at Apple store

por

Ok but is this USB-C to HDMI cable for real or just speculation?

And would iTunes recognize the device, and how would you force it into DFU mode?? No keys to press?!

por

Essentially what happens is when you unplug the power and HDMI cable, the boot loader interface gets powered by USB and this goes into recovery automatically. There is a light in the front that theoretically should illuminate to tell you it’s ready. If not iTunes will do its thing if it works. Your idea of iTunes itself supporting cables isn’t quite right. Software doesn’t care what cable you use. That’s just the medium or method of delivery in the physical sense. I looked st the port itself and there appears to be pins that surround the hdmi that I guess are grounded out during normal operation or otherwise inactive. These have got to be how they restore it short of opening the device up. The only other thing I can think of is POE injected lan power to power the boot loader. I wonder if anyone can reverse engineer this to get a 3rd party cable going

por

Alright, I understand that there are extra pins on the HDMI cable jack which could be used as a USB interface, so my questions are:

1. Does such a cable really exist, and where to buy it or build it from?

2. How would you put the ATV4K into DFU mode if in fact such a cable exists?

You have to do a very specific button press.

Step one: Do a soft reset by pressing and holding the menu and home button until the sleep menu comes up and continue to hold it starts to Reboot as soon as it starts to reboot Press and Hold the volume down and play and pause button and then it will bring up the recovery mode screen separate to the main interface . : Please be reassured this is run independently from and completely separate from the standard interface and when you recover it uses your Internet Which you have previously set up in the main interface just follow the prompts in recovery mode and you will be fine

There is a Lightening Bolt jack under a flap right above the RJ-45 prong slot in the jack on the back of the 4K. Notice how there's an extra “dent” above the prong?

But I have read that the 4K restores through iCloud. Which would be an Internet connection. That's why I am here. Trying to find out if the 4K will restore itself without iTunes? Since there is no iTunes in Catalina…… Not that I'm using it.

@Dominic < And what if the WiFi which was set up in the normal interface is no longer available, either defective, changed password/SSID, or simply the AppleTV4K box is not at that original location? If there any way to set up the AppleTV4K box with a new WiFi hotspot? Thanks.

Would this work for me, as the power light on my ATV 4K does not even light, I took it apart and checked the capacitors and they looked ok,

That's Apple for ya, sadly their Apple TV4K devices are virtually unfixable due to the lack of a USB interface.

All you can do is reset it and hope for the best. :/
