I want to improve performance

I am new to this but fairly practical. i have bought a late 2009 27 inch iMac and want to give it a 'boost'. Looking at the forums, it seems that 'more memory' and changing the drive to a SSD are my 2 options. Can anyone advise on which to do first/ which kit to buy? Thank you in advance!

Yes upgrading the ram and HDD to SSD will be great. I have one with a i7 and 20GB of ram and haven’t upgraded to a SSD yet. Mine runs great without a SSD but it’s almost time for me to upgrade too.

thanks for the reply. what would you advise doing first?

Probably SSD. Ram won’t need to be upgraded for a while unless you’re using big or a lot of programs at the same time.

I’ve learned that upgrading the processor and the ram first won’t speed you a computer much. But a ssd will speed it up a ton.

Hold the CPU upgrade!! The older 2309 Core2Duo systems can't be upgraded to i Series CPU's as they use a very different socket. The newer 2374 models that have the i Series CPU's can be!

RAM is by far the easiest upgrade! You can push it to 16 GB. Unless you are working on large vids or image editing or have lots of apps or windows open I wouldn't go that far 8 - 12 should be more than enough.

As for upgrading the HDD to a SSD you will need to be careful what you get as this is only a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) system so make sure the SSD you get is able to run at this slower I/O speed. You'll also need this: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac Late 2009 - Mid 2010 Hard Drive Upgrade as your systems cooling (SMC) requires the input from the drive to manage its cooling. You'll also need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter frame.

You may get more big for your buck by going to a hybrid drive " SSHD " and they come in 3.5" drives. It's according to how deep your pockets are and your storage requirements.

If your machine is maxed out spec wise. It is always a good idea to de-install any programs you don't use regularly. Software sitting within the library, can be buggy. Background processing slows everything down. The bigger your system folder the slower your computer will run.

It is best to use software to make sure it deletes associated system files. I use cleanmymac. There are others out there.

Another thing people overlook. Is having folders of thousands of files on the desktop. Use aliases & file the folders within the documents or on external drives. It really works, honestly.
