Damaged iSight Socket on the LB - kernel_task @ 400% - fan at 6000 rpm

Hello,

Note: To Forum sysadmin, I typed up my question on the US web side, and when I logged in was redirected to the FR web site, my question was gone. This SUCKS!

So long story short, I damaged the iSight socket from my LB while changing the battery. This socket is now separated from the LB and it can not be resoldered (the LB tracks went with the connector).

Diagnostics says PFM006 (SMC), NDC001 (iSight), PPN001 (Power supply) might be problematic.

I hacked up the kernel extensions (check here: https://www.davidschlachter.com/misc/ker...) to avoid the throttling and to return my computer to a usable state, though it annoys co-workers because it sounds like a jet during take off.

iStat Pro shows no temperatures on the Left Fin Stack and Right Fin Stack.

1) Can I do anything to override readings of the missing sensors to leave that kernel extension in its right place, because I suspect that turbo boost is also affected.

2) Where are those two sensors physically exactly?

TIA

Stephane

No your question didn't get lost!

IFIXIT has a few foreign sites to support people who speak different languages. It takes some time for someone to translate and post the english version to the main site. So when you jump between the sites things are not in perfect sync.

Not sure I have a good answer here for you. SMC is looking for the input from the iSight camera thermal sensor and it appears you also damaged another one as well on the main logic board.

At this point You'll need to find someone with the expertise to fix your logic board. While the pads for the connector are ripped off they can be put back and using patches re-wire the board back to good working order. Not many people have this skill and you may have a hard time locating anyone locally. The only other option is replacing the logic board.

As you've noted SMC will take two actions the first is speed up there fans to prevent the system from cooking and will also throttle the CPU down. While you over-rode the CPU throttling I'm not sure its smart to kill the fan's at this point it will be the start of the end of the system in short order as you bake its brains to death.

The easiest option here is just bite the bullet and get a replacement logic board and put it in: MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2014, Integrated Graphics) 2.2 GHz Logic Board

Sorry I have no magic fix here.

I agree 100% with @danj. Normally that high process % is related to a bad temperature sensor and disabling fan controls isn't ever a good idea - unless you are ramping them up. I'm not near my computer today, but if I can, I'll post back Monday where that sensors is if on the motherboard.

I would opt to send the board for a mail-in repair to a third party shop if you have the time you can afford to not have your computer for a week or two at work. There are many shops that will do the work for half the cost of a replacement motherboard.
