Replaced the screen, and while the phone responds to the computer, the screen is completely black (nothing on the screen, even when shining a light at the screen).

Have you tried to reconnect the original screen (if it's still functional)? Make sure all the connections are seated properly. Also, try another display. It sounds like you may have gotten a bad part in.

I ordered another display, and the new display works great -- so it appears that the old one was DOA.

The old screen is shattered, and didn't survive the removal.
