My 12 y/o whirlpool duet suddenly started shaking & vibrating terrible. It's level and sits on cement. The drum isn't loose. Could a shock absorber or spring go bad so quickly to cause violent shaking? Also there's a small amount of water in the drum but it's not clogged and hoses are free & clear. Any help would be appreciated. Ty

It sounds like one of those 12yr old springs has sprung loose or broken. Front load washers have concrete around the drum to keep from jumping around and leveling it out.
The springs do take a good bit of a beating.
You should be able to see what the issue is by removing the front or back access panel and watch as a small load goes through.
Some machine can tell there is nothing in it, so it will not do a cycle.
