Is The OEM Screen Kit Any Different From the Original Screen?

Hi,

I‘m consider to have my cracked iphone 7 screen fixed. I want to make sure that the screen part to be exactly the same. The screen kit I found on this website is marked as OEM, can anyone explain what does this exactly mean? Does it mean this part was used by apple or this is only an aftermarket part option?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Best,

Yubei

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and is typically used to indicate that the parts are from the same original manufacturer(s) as the brand—in this case Apple—you know and trust. Apple doesn't actually make the screens and the display assembly is from several companies.

I'll let iFixit comment directly on their OEM policy, but generally, yes, it means it's same model/specs/manufacturer(s) as an original iPhone.

I should add many people state OEM and its not! Some parts are just not available as Apple demands the suppler can't sell them.

Rejects and dumpster diving is often the source for some of these, so be careful! Know your source a fly by night seller Vs a proper store front thats been around a few years.

Well, Apple controls the supply chain so you can't get real OEM parts! People selling OEM are lying to you!

The best you can get is a reconditioned display which is a remanufactured Apple display. Or getting the display from a parted iPhone. But in both of these the supplier should be up front on the source.

As an example iFixit sells a 'Premium' display which is one that is a very good 3rd party, some are not as good, and Apple is doing their best to make 3rd party parts harder to use.

@danj I also have another question.

Many people talk about OEM parts. Are they original, if so, what differences do they have with original parts and reconditioned parts?

THANKS

Where you source the part becomes the issue! The letters O-E-M are a fiction!

They are intended to sway you into buying from that given source. Years ago if you walked in New York or Boston you would find peddlers on the street trying to sell you knockoffs of just about anything! Rolex watches or Gucci handbags clearly they weren't the real thing at a few hundred dollars imported from China. Even before that we had German cameras replicated in Japan!

Today both make good quality stuff but under the watchful eye's of the brand maker in our case Apple under a contract. Even still there are copycats which may not create an exact duplicate of the part! The more complex the part or the materials needed often brings these to the light.

So technically Apple is the OEM and Apple for many years didn't offer access to their parts unless you had the device fixed directly or via their resellers. Which is were the whole OEM term blowup! As some stuff from the contracted makers would find its way out the back door either as rejects or incomplete. As an example Apple's use of locking parts so the makers part is not complete and only at the assembly line does it become active.

So where you buy the given part is more of the issue and how honest they are of the source of the part is the more important!

Last point! I always recommend using used parts whenever possible! And I always stick to a seller who's in it for the long haul and offers a good return and warranty policy. While price is important it's not my first objective! Getting a good part is!
