More info please? Have you checked your oil? How many miles does the car have? How old is the car?
Probably just take it into a mechanic as it sounds like your engine might be shot and you need a new engine or car.

Engine sound "clacking" repeative and check out under hood, discovered no oil then pour add oil. The sound become less, and smell gasses out muffler exhaust. Run test scanner show all green passed. metal to metal scratching. 2002, 143k. Liberty. 6V It need inside engine job to take out and fix it. something loosen make sound bang bang bang bang rhythm. Thax!
