Dropped phone in isopropyl alcohol now it wont turn on.

So i purchased a working phone from a co worker. Screen was messed up, but the phone had power. When i tried to do a screen replacement i noticed the phone had wet spots near the speaker (lower bottom right). I read online if you drop the phone in alcohol that it can help the phone from building corrosion when it dried, so i did that and now the phone wont power on, after letting it dry.

Any suggestions on how to fix. I did remove the EMI shields and the logic board looks perfect no sign of corrosion.

so if the phone was working why did you put it in isopropyl

por

It was probably just the way you want about doing it, and not actually just the fact that you did it. Or maybe the alcohol you used was 70% or 91% and not 99% ?

I personally know tho, 100%, that submerging your water damaged phone in 99% alcohol WILL dry out any form of water-based liquid that may be left inside the phone. If it doesn't work, then the phone must have already gotten or have been physically-damaged because of the water-damage, and was already gone at that point.. Even just with the other 1% of liquid that's NOT alcohol in the isopropyl alcohol you submerged it in could have forced the issue or could have been the "last straw" for the phone..

*My phone, as I type, unfortunately, has water spots under the screen still, because I am waiting to go get some from the store, before I'd do anything else.

- And I'm on the phone right now ONLY because I needed to try and find other solutions online.. If any..

Mildred Richardson you got some sound advice here except the rice. I'd suggest you start at the beginning and start from scratch. No reason to "kiss the phone goodbye" just yet.

Consider this a supplement only. For now stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse.

The very first step I would take is to disassemble your phone. Use these guides to disassemble your phone. Take a careful and close look at all components and connectors. Truly assess the damage. Look for corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. Use 90%+ ( I prefer96% available at local hardware stores, pharmacies etc.) isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush (small soft tooth brush or artist paint brush)and clean your parts (logic board etc. not the display) some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for a Apple iPhone 3G but it is still pertinent to your phone as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning. Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. Also, you do not need to leave it to dry for a day. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and dissipate the water. You can place it in a warm 180-200 Fahrenheit oven (not hot) for 10 min to help with the evaporation. The importance here is the cleaning. If you can get it professionally cleaned, use that opportunity. After you cleaned it properly do not forget to replace the battery. This is a must and not an option. It will fail if you do not take care of it now. After that reassemble your phone and then troubleshoot for any residual damage

awesome. Ive already let it dry out for about a day, havent touched it since. So i will try and do another cleaning in 96 percent isopropyl, with a soft brush. Im not 100 percent sure about the over, not that it wont work, but that i dont trust my oven. Do you know if a hot air gun not a rework but the cheap ones will help dry it? THanks for the guide.

por

You really do not need it. Just let it air dry for a good while.

por

got the phone to start up but its just how it was when i first try to repair it. In other words back to square one. No reply from the screen just a whole bunch of crazy lines and no response on the touch screen

por

would a hard reset help or a restore?

por

"just a whole bunch of crazy lines and no response on the touch screen" sounds like a bad display assembly. If you done everything right to clean it etc. Replace the assembly. Here is teh guide iPhone 5s LCD and Digitizer Replacement and the part is available right here iPhone 5s LCD and Digitizer

You somehow misread the article or read a wildly inaccurate article.

You can clean the board using isopropyl alcohol, not dunking the whole thing in it.

i saw a youtube video of someone dropping the phone in it, i guess i can kiss the phone goodbye

I saw a video where the guy said you could charge your iPhone battery in the microwave. I didn't believe it. There is a lot of misinformation out there on the web. Remember the old adage, “You are young yet, my friend,” replied my host, “but the time will arrive when you will learn to judge for yourself of what is going on in the world, without trusting to the gossip of others. Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see." Edgar Allen Poe

I saw a video of bases on Mars yesterday from Google maps. I didn't believe that either.

They call it the "Affordable Health Care Act", not if you have a job!

There is alcohol under the chips. Disconnect the battery and let it dry for a day or so. It will be just fine. Alcohol is slightly conductive and the chips dont like it. It will live. Just let it dry

Unfortunately, there are a large number of videos and articles on You Tube -- and elsewhere on the net -- that are totally fake or intentionally misleading. While some are written and produced by some very well meaning people, others are simply out there to wreak havoc. I'm sorry to say that you have fallen prey to one of those videos/articles. Dunking your phone in a container of alcohol -- typically people will use isopropyl alcohol -- is no different than dunking it in water. Isopropyl alcohol is typically 30~50% water. Which is about all you need to damage sensitive electronics. Even if you used denatured alcohol, you likely caused damage that you cannot see. Partly because you cannot see the underside of the components mounted on the board, or inside the many sub assemblies (camera, headphone jack, charging port, etc.). People tend to believe that alcohol does not leave any residue when it dries. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case.

Back in the day, we would use freon TF for our precision cleaning needs. Unfortunately, that stuff was banned many years ago, and with the demise of tape decks of any kind, a consumer friendly replacement isn't a big priority. However, I've had some recent success using naptha as a replacement. Naptha is highly flammable, but sold as many products. Lighter fluid, coleman stove fuel, and I'm told automotive map sensor cleaner, are either straight naptha, or a mix of naptha and mineral spirits. Coleman fuel and lighter fluid are both pure naptha.

My suggestion is that you disassemble the phone one more time, and carefully wipe down those parts that you can readily and easily see. Pay particular attention to any exposed contacts. Keep in mind to use a clean, LINT FREE rag or cloth. Never use a q-tip or paper towel. After you've done this, drop everything into a bag of rice and let it sit overnight. The rice will remove any residual moisture that may still exist. Remove the parts from the rice, one at a time (in the order that they need to be reassembled). Use a can of dust-off, or other canned air to blow away any dust that may be present from the rice and anywhere else. This time pay particular attention to all recessed or enclosed contact points. I cannot guarantee success, but it may well do the trick. I recently used this -- successfully --on my daughter's cell phone after she dropped it in the toilet.

I would suggest you use a hair dryer on low heat (so you don't melt any plastic items) and blow air into the open phone (back removed). This will vaporize any remianing alcohol that may be causing a problem. I used isopropyl alcohol to clean flux off boards for many years with a brush, no problem (it is normally 70% al but you can get 90%).

so do you mean like remove all components from the phone to where all i have is a clear back housing and the check for any alcohol remaining and dry it with the blow dryer? I get power on the phone is jus the screen has no touch now and looks horrible with lines you can barely see the apple logo

por

its definitely the logic board, i used a different phone and swapped the logic board seems to be something wrong with the board. Not sure what it is everything looks fine to me. I even thought about removing the plastic thing where the connectors for the lcd are and check for moisture under there but i havent tried it.

por

there could be damage under the soldered shields, isopropyl helps displace the water but if its under the shields its not really going anywhere even with drying it

I'd say one of two things it's totally up to you how much you might need whatever info or data you might have in your phone like all your cat videos and ex girlfriend pics. Anyways why don't you plug in one of them otg adapters with a mouse and see how far you get with it might try recalibrating the touch or graphics settings. My Obama Android phone would get condensated from sweat when id leave it in my pocket while I worked. Then I dropped it so many times but only cracked it near the back button so it started ghosting back button presses on its own I was lucky to get half a text message before it would start back back back back. It was crazy. Finally it stopped responding then I finally got a new phone. The other day out of curiosity I threw the phone on and it was working normal wtf. So maybe just leave it alone for a while it might work. Or whatever. Or just roll it up in a pair of your best socks and throw that thing in the dryer on low heat a couple of times make some of that Rice you were using and eat while you wait.. I'm dying to know what the ending is gonna be. Good luck bud..

I switched to carrier Pigeon and have had no problem other than international calls take a little longer to connect. If it ever stops working, I’ll take your advice and put it and the rice in the oven and get some grain alcohol to dry me out. Have a wonderful week ?❤️?
