Can't boot from internal ssd APPLE SSD AP0128H

My Macbook Pro 15 retina mid 2014 has a 128gb APPLE SSD AP0128H installed.

The laptop is presently booted from an external ssd without any trouble. The OS recognizes the internal ssd just fine, and I can move files to and from the internal drive without problems. But when I try to install Mac OS to the internal ssd, I run into problems. The install program sees the ssd and allows installing Mac Os to it, but when the installation is complete, and the laptop restarts, all I get is a blinking folder with a question mark.

Is it a bad drive? and if it is, how come I can use the internal drive for normal file storage but not as a boot drive?

Open the system preferences and go to the 'Startup Disk' panel. Then click the lock so you can unlock the setting and then select your internal SSD drive. Once its set hit the restart button and once the system has bonged disconnect your external drive it should boot up correctly now.

The alternate way is to hold the option key doing boot that will allow you to access which drive to boot from. Unlike the Prep setting it won't hold.

Did you have some other OS on this system?

Its sounding like the boot loader is damaged. You'll need to boot up under the external drive and then run disk utility wiping the complete drive the re-installing the OS again.

I think that either the firmware has to be updated on that Mac with a SSD from Apple that matches that year fist, then MAYBE....it will work.

OR possibly update the firmware on the SSD itself.... OR

That SSD does not work in 2014 Macs....

I have same problem using 2014 MacBook Air and AP0128H SSD,

After Hours trying to get a fresh install on it using a 2014 MBA I just put it back in the 2015 MBA it came from and it worked as it should.

ssd AP0128H just not compatible with 2014 Macs!

Update (03/11/2020)

The last release of the 11″ MacBook Air in Early 2015 brought minor upgrades to a few components, but left the SSD tech virtually unchanged. The drives were the only of Apple’s product lines to keep the PCIe 2.0 x2 technology from the previous generation, but the drives were still modified with firmware changes that rendered them incompatible with earlier MacBook Air laptops. The new drives were also now branded “Apple” rather than with the third party manufacturer’s name, although the flash chips on the SSD make it clear that Toshiba and SanDisk were manufacturers.
