How to repair/replace micro USB port, harvest from another phone?

Alcatel Idol 4 (6055U) Cricket phone was dropped, the back glass cracked so I got a new one off eBay and replaced it myself. All the while, the phone was getting harder and harder to charge. For awhile I could charge it (slowly) by holding a cable in, pressing forward and bending to the right. Even broke a few cables doing this - they eventually ripped at the connection site. Charging became more & more difficult so I removed the back glass again, thinking maybe I could tighten a screw or connection but now it won't charge at all.

I believe the battery is completely dead because at one point, I don't know how, but I got the charger to light the led white notification light but that time it only blinked.

When I tried holding down the power button for 20-30 secs after reading suggestions to do that online, that just made the white notification light blink like a heartbeat: two quick blinks and a pause, over and over.

Now I can't get the phone to do anything - no charger registers anything no matter how I push, pull or prod. I'm betting by now it's broken for sure.

My questions are:

1) since the battery went completely dead, am I going to need to buy a whole new battery, or can the one in it be (re)charged?

2) is there a way I can remove the rear glass one more time and charge the (non removable) battery independent of the micro USB?

And

3) would it be possible to remove the micro usb port from one of my older android phones that I know still charges well, and use that to replace the broken one in my Idol 4?

Thanks for any help.

Hey Dee!

If there are no signs of damage to the battery, then chances are its just out of juice since you've been unable to charge it. No need to replace it. Should charge right up once new port is installed.

As for the 2nd question, there is no way to charge the battery outside the device. TECHNICALLY it is possible, but it would not be worth the effort. Best bet is to purchase a new chargeport flex online to replace the broken one. Harvesting a port from a different model will not work in this case unfortunately

Hope that helps!

A new "chargeport flex"?

Thanks Andre, but can't I just get a Charging Port Dock Connector? (That's why I was thinking I could just harvest one off an old phone).

Could you provide any more detail please? Thanks

It depends.

If you are experienced in mircosoldering then yes it would be a few dollars cheaper to purchase just the chargeport instead of replacing the the whole chargeport flex. If you purchase the flex you simply need to plug the cable into the motherboard. With only the port you will need to desolder the current port and solder on the new one. I don't recommend this unless you have a lot of experience microsoldering .Personally I dont think it's worth all the extra effort to save a few dollars.

Here's a listing for a chargeport flex for reference. Double check your model number though to make sure you order the correct one :)

I tried to remove the old charge port from an HP tablet and replace it with a new one. The port was very cheap from China, and eventually I was successful, but it was very difficult: the solder kept bridging the contacts. I am sure there are techniques that I should have learned first, not to mention specialised tools e.g. a micro-soldering iron. A cell phone is an order of magnitude smaller so it would be very difficult without specialised tools. I would certainly recommend replacing the appropriate board if it is available. Unfortunately the HP tablet turned out to have another problem with the digitizer when I got it charged up again. That meant replacing the screen. I can't remember if was available, but if it was the price was too high and I gave up.
