Hi, assuming that you have the Snow Leopard disc you can insert it into your optical drive and hold down the C key as soon as you turn it on. Keep holding it until you see the Apple logo and the spinning circle underneath it, then let the key go. If you get nothing "AT All" then just restart it with the disc already in it and don't even bother holding down the C key (it suppose to read it automatically), it may take a few minutes for things to appear so just be patient (5 minutes will be a little to long). Once you get the Install screen then go to the disk utility tab and choose disk utility. If NO hard drive shows up on your left side margin of that screen then the hard drive is DEAD. You'll need a new one. Yes, you can still use the advise you got earlier.

+ good start. What does he do it the hard drive icon does show up?

Update, if you have success with the procedure that I last gave you and that Hard drive icon shows up still click on that installation disk (not the hard drive) because that is the only way that you will be able to repair the hard drive disc itself. The hard drive can't repair itself like that, you must use the installation disk to do that via the "Disk Utility" option.

Sorry its taking me so long to get back to this. Now apparently something is going on (stuck in some particular mode), now there is a way to FORCE the machine to see the hard drive upon starting up. I just don't remember what key(s) you hold down upon restarting the machine so ask "Mayer" what keys do you press to force the machine to see the hard drive(s). Now if you see the hard drive, just click on it and follow the screen instructions and if you run into the same issue again I would just replace that hard drive and reinstall the OS system.

Charles & I got you started, but Mayer has a good point. You could have a corrupt OS...and/or HD. The safest thing to do is back up your HD (except for OSX). Reformat the HD, reinstall OSX, and test the hard drive. Even if the only thing that is corrupt is the OS, it could be bad sectors on the hard drive. Hard drives are too cheep to risk loss of one only data. I lost my HD on my iMac of the same vintage and did loose some irreplaceable data.

Connect another Mac with firewire. Start the MacBook in firewire HD mode. If you get the firewire symbol on your MacBook screen and no drive shows on the other mac, hard drive has failed.
