Looking for Apple blade PCIe SSD. Want to purchase & where to buy

iMac 27 inch 5k late 2015 model 17.1

I am looking at doing a full tear down of my late 27 inch 5 k iMac to replace the SSD on the motherboard ( from what i can tell its a 4 lane PCIe based)

I want to replace this rather than the SATA HDD (with a SATA SSD)

I see there are some originals (Apple) available on eBayhere:

They are expensive but can i remove the 24 GB flash and replace with above? Are they compatible?

FYI: you posted the same URL twice.

Thx Dan

Is the PCI e SSD for the macbook pro 2013-2015 the same as for my imac?

I have seen some posts in this regard on here

Do you know of anyone that has successfully replaced this 24 G SSD part of fusion drive with 1 T one?

thx again for your help

I've done the older 2012 & 2013 models which uses a very different blade SSD.

They use a SATAe (AHCI) unlike the newer 2014 onwards which use a PCIe (NVMe). While the connections look the same they are different! And Apple uses different OS drivers between them.

First you have a Fusion Drive config (system has a 24 GB SSD is the clue here). You'll need to break the Fusion Drive set before you take the old SSD out. Here's how thats done: How to split up a Fusion Drive

Here's the IFIXIT guide to replace the blade SSD: iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display SSD Replacement. Review the guide fully! The most important part is taking the display off as its very easy to damage if you don't use the correct tools and techniques as outlined in the guide. Many people have killed there displays which is a very expensive Opps!

As for the drive its self: You should talk with the supplier to make sure it's the correct version. So far none of the major 3rd party suppliers offer a SSD blade option. So I can't offer any guidance with this supplier.

If you get it to work let us know! Good Luck
