Dryer Thumps and Stops Intermittently During Cycles

G'day.

We've had our dryer now for about 5 or 6 years.

Up until a couple of months ago, it's been working great.

But then quite suddenly it started thumping and making loud dragging sounds during each cycle, eventually stopping for 10 or 20 seconds at a time mid-cycle. The problems weren't constant, were however present in every cycle run.

At this point, I asked a repairman to come out to fix it. It was taken away for a few days and then returned. The repairman said that the timer had been replaced. To replace the timer, I paid about half of what a brand new dryer of the same model would have cost me.

Within a day or two of the dryer being back, it started making the loud dragging and thumping sounds that it was making earlier, although the dryer seemed to be tumbling somewhat quicker than before. I did not notice it stopping though.

I rang the repairman again, who came out again to collect it again. He had it in his workshop for a couple of days this time, to monitor it. He said that he monitored it for a whole day, without noticing any issues. He tried it on all kinds of settings and load quantities. Nada.

Since the dryer's return, I've run it a few of times. This is the fourth time that I've run it since its 2nd return from the repairman, and not only is it still - noticeably - making those loud dragging noises again, but tonight it actually stopped completely mid-cycle again for about 30 seconds.

The repairman said that he'd checked every other component on the machine, but can't find anything else wrong with it?? (Despite me showing him a video of the dryer making those dragging noises)

I've uploaded a short video of the dryer malfunctioning again tonight. What actually made me start recording the video tonight was that the machine had been dead silent for about 20 seconds mid-cycle by the time I'd grabbed my phone. The video starts with the last few seconds of machine silence, before it just springs back to life. A couple of seconds later you can hear the machine dragging, and you might also be able to see that the machine is struggling to continue tumbling. This particular cycle has been full of these intermittent issues.

Solução escolhida

Cause 1

Drive Belt

The drive belt is a very long, slender belt that wraps all the way around the dryer drum, around a tension pulley, and then around the drive motor. Over time, the drive belt can become frayed or otherwise damaged. If the drive belt is frayed or damaged, the dryer will be noisy as it turns. Inspect the drive belt for signs of wear. If the drive belt is worn, replace it.

Cause 2

Drum Roller

One or more of the drum rollers might be worn out. Many dryers have two drum support rollers on the rear of the drum, and some dryers have two more rollers supporting the front of the drum. When the drum rollers are worn out, they can cause the dryer to make a loud rumbling noise. To determine if the rollers are worn out, inspect the rollers. If one or more of the rollers are severely worn, we recommend replacing all of the rollers at the same time as a preventative measure. (The roller shaft can often be reused if it is in good condition. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.)

Cause 3

Drum Roller Axle

One or more of the drum roller axles might be worn out. Most dryers have two drum support rollers on the rear of the drum, and some dryers have two more rollers supporting the front of the drum. Over time, the drum rollers and axles wear out, causing the dryer to make a loud rumbling noise. To determine if the drum roller axles are worn out, remove the belt from the dryer and try turning the drum by hand. If the drum does not rotate freely, check the support rollers for wear. If the rollers spin freely without wobbling, the axles do not need to be replaced. If a roller wobbles and/or does not spin freely, we recommend replacing all of the axles and rollers as a preventative measure.

I feel that this may be a motor issue. there is either something stuck in there that is getting caught and spit back out, or there is a failure in the motor. I dont thing this would be a control panel issue, or a belt issue. or it would not be intermittent. But unfortunately you would probably pay someone a bunch of money to do this with no guarantee of repair. If you can find a DIFFERENT repair gent to look at it and maybe give an estimate of repair, you could probably find out exactly what is wrong for free.
