Heat extractor instead of DVD Optical Drive

Is posible to remove the dvd optica drive to

put a heat extractor or any other cooling system.

I want to reduce the macbook temperature, I'm most of the time in a Library watching educational videos on youtube.

And also running parallels .

And it makes the cpu to 77º , fans 6200 rpm so it turns too noisy .

For me would be perfect to replace the optical drive with a Fan ,extractor any or cooling system , capable to get the heat out through the slot where normally we insert the dvd. In a silent way of course.

It is posible or I'm just dreaming ?

I am having the same issues with my MBP, and I also was thinking to remove optical drive and install additional heatsink. Have you had any success?

It could

be done, but this is not actually a "repair" question.

Removing the Optical drive and the felt from the slot is no problem, neither is finding a fan or two to epoxy in place. The trick will be in powering them on.

I would opt for low speed fans that are either on all the time or triggered through a switch/button run out the disk slot.

I say switched because unless you have a way to power them off they'll drain your battery pretty quickly. I should think a software switch would be pretty complicated.

Remember to return and mark accepted the answer that best solves your problem.

Good luck,

I understand , I need a Fan with its own temperature sensor , so itself can determine when to stop or run faster. I don't know if exists that kind of "intelligent" fans. And if it's worth for the price.

I agree with Meyer you shouldn't really need to do this.

If you're having heat problems, I would replace the thermal paste and clean the vents and fans out when doing it. It's just not necessary to install such a heat sink.

Ok I did it , Here are the photos http://picasaweb.google.com/fernandez.Al...

As you can se , there was a lot of dust !

Now its cooler ,

Chrome surfing:

8% cpu -> 45º -> 1600rpm

But running parallels :

System cpu usage : 50% (parallels) + 4% cpu user usage -> 72º ->6200 rpm (heatsink 1:54º heatsink2:53º

So, as for my normal use of mac It's so easy to get temperatures over 70 , (if I open youtube + paralleles I get 80º ) , I still need a solution.

Fan at 6200 , its not something broke mechanical noise, it's working well but it's noisy

Now that I already know how to open the macbook and remove the fan ,

I thinking to search and buy a more efficient fan (if it exists) to replace the original one .

Do you know if it exists ?

And do you thinks this ratios are normal ?

54%-60% cpu = 70º 78º = 6000 - 6200 rpm

70- 80% cpu = 80º = 6200 rpm

thanks
