The Mac screen was broken when it was dropped to the floor. The computer still works as before. There is a dark stripe in the middle of the screen from top to bottom about one inch wide. At the bottom of the screen shows some broken images. Can this screen be replaced?

This can absolutely be repaired, what you have damaged is the LCD.
The LCD can be replaced on its own but this would be a very difficult repair for anyone who isn't fairly experienced with MacBook repair. Alternatively you can replace the LCD assembly which is a much easier (but more expensive) repair.
If you do the LCD assembly make sure you get the correct model for your MacBook

I replaced the battery recently. Does this experience help with replacing the screen?
Actually the LCD with top case is only the hinge screws and the data cable.
Doing the assembly wouldn't be a huge step up in difficulty from the battery, this guide should give you an idea of what it entails MacBook Unibody Model A1278 Display Assembly Replacement
It will be a slightly different process depending on your exact model though.
I believe they have the A1278 because of the power button. So this guide is pretty close.
