Not sure if increasing the size of your SSD will make that much difference here. MS Excel is more CPU & memory bound than storage bound.

With that said, your system is lean for memory (4 GB) which sadly you can't increase so Widows does what it can to leverage the SSD storage for virtual RAM. So one of the things I would look at is see how full the SSD is I would leave at a minimum of 1/3 of the space free. See if cleaning the system of junk you can squeeze a bit more performance. If you are able to see some improvement than maybe a bigger SSD will help.

If that didn't help then the CPU maybe over taxed with to many processes. Run Performance Monitor to see whats using CPU & RAM resources. You could have some spyware or other nasty running in background or the system was loaded up with Bloatware/Freeware (a big problem in regular Windows systems).

In years past I had to create custom Windows OS installers to strip out all of the junk the manufactures would add to their OS installations. Think it like all of the Adware we see when hitting a news site on the web like USAToday which slows your system and wastes your bandwidth downloading it all when you only wanted to see was the raw news feed.

Here's the IFIXIT guide to replace the SSD: Microsoft Surface Pro 4 SSD Drive Replacement and heres a bit more on the SSD your system has and possible replacement units: Samsung M.2 NVMe x4 SSD - SM961

Very good answer. Just look at the temprature the m.2 SSD can reach since you use it in a tablet. The Samsung 950 got really hot, think the 961 is also rather warm.

Hello Dan,

Thank you for your useful answer, however i will try to give you more information about the scenario that 's happening.

1- the SSD has a current capacity 58gb remaining which means 50% free of its original capacity 128gb. this will not lead to improvement.

2- concerning the cpu usage please check the cpu when i open google chrome + word 2013 + windows explorer folder--> cpu usage = 48% (COMODO Internet Security 19%) memory=78% (mostly google chrome)

3- i closed all the applications the cpu drops to 2 or 3 % then i ran excel sheet (size 200mb), it took 2 min 20 second to open (it s ok maybe a large file).

than it starts calculating alone and it mentioned below at the right side of the excel tab --> calculating: (4 processors): 3%,4%... and it took around 10 min to be able to touch easily SP4 again. in the meantime cpu =100% memory = 90%.

and wherever i start working with this large amount of data in excel (e.g. running an if, else statement, filtering or any calculation) it will start calculating for more than 10 min cpu & memory goes high fan speed /sound is high too.

4- i have test the internal copy for a folder from desktop to desktop on my sp4 max copy speed was 135mb/s

5- at my work i have a desktop PC i3, 4gb ram, ssd faster than the one installed here (R/W speed around 500mb/s) i am not facing this problem when working with such large excel files.

unfortunately i was not able to send you picture of the cpu usage n memory....

because no attachment feature.....

@danj & @bearl any suggestions!??

your help and cooperation are highly appreciated.

with kind regards,

Elie

To me it looks like the CPU is different in the tablet a core m3 think that one is weaker than the core i3 the m3 has only got 0,9GHz and slower GPU clock speed. Look at this comparison

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-31...

Change the core i3 to the one in your work PC.

my current sp4 specs are:

windows 10 pro 64bit

i5-6300 cpu @2.40GHz (4cpus)

4gb ram

NVMe SAMSUNG MZFLV128

i don t think the issue is really from the cpu it is probably from NVMe Samsung!

por

The Samsung NVMe SSD is quite fast! So I don't see that as the issue unless its defective. Sounds like you'll need to talk with Microsoft on getting this repaired under warranty.

por

FYI NVME SSD SPEEED is ~550mb/s for read and ~150 mb/s for write i think that is the problem an external ssd drive with higher speed plug in into USB 3.0 will perform better.

por

Nope! The internal PCIe connection is much faster than what you could get externally using a USB3.0 connection.

The SSD here is very fast. I would recommend you review the specs of other SSD's you'll find the Samsung is one of the fastest in a tight group of the others.

Again you're blaming the wrong part from a specs perspective. You need to get the system serviced by Microsoft as there is something defective here.
