Blade/M.2 SSD for Late 2015 iMac 5K 27" 17,1?

Hi all,

From all of the research I have been doing, it looks like apple uses a proprietary M.2 connector. They call M.2 SSD's "blades" although they're the same thing. Anyway, it doesn't look like this can be done, but maybe someone here has successfully found a compatible one that works? I have done a LOT of research, but possibly still not enough.

Some advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Mayer,

Thank you for the response. I have seen this tutorial on how to do it, but that wasn't my question. My question was if there are any compatible M.2 SSD/blades with Apple's proprietary PCIe technology.

There is a 17,1 model breakdown showing what kind of SSD goes inside, but I have not been able to find that SSD. iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Teardown

I want to be absolutely sure it works before I buy it because I am sure disassembling the iMac is a lengthy process.

Thanks

OWC has been making the Apple compatible SSD M2 sticks but, to my knowledge, they have not gotten to this machine yet. Here's what they do recommend for drives:https://eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/imac....

Please let me know what you have and what your storage needs are and we can look at the possibilities of SSD, SSHD, TAR disk, Fusion drive.

Thanks for the response Mayer. I really appreciate it. Currently in my iMac I have a 1 TB HDD and an empty "Blade" PCIe slot. I would like a 128 or 256 GB PCIe SSD that is compatible with this iMac. I have been looking but everything I have been seeing does not seem like it is guaranteed to work 100%. Thanks for all of your help!

@danj gave a good answer on what can be done at this time to upgrade until the blades become available, here: HDD Upgrade/Replacement with SSD?

Hi @mayer, sorry for the late reply and thanks again for your help. I have seen that post and would not like to replace the HDD with a 2.5" SSD. I would like to keep my 1 TB HDD and add the "blade" SSD. I have looked all over and have not been able to find a clear answer on whether or not this is completely possible. As you mentioned, OWC does not sell a custom proprietary blade SSD.

So I did some more research and found this thread.

On Step 10 I found that they listed the SSD that comes with this iMac model and searched the Model # on google and found this on Ebay (along with other exact listings with varying capacity).

Would this work? I am confident in tearing down the iMac. I have handled many apple products before. I just have not been able to find a compatible SSD. What are your thoughts?
