UX301 - Am I able to clean fans and change battery by myself?

As the title says I want to give my Asus Ultrabook UX301 some love after 3 years of usage by cleaning the fans and replacing the battery

The Asus Servicehotline wasn't really helpful as they said "I don't know whether you can change battery and clean the fans. Just send it to us". But it's not an option for me to go several weeks without my laptop AND to pay hundreds for it.

That being said I can't find any answer by just googling. So. Is someone here who already did it and can explain whether it's possible and how?

Thanks in advance

Without knowing the specifics of this particular ultrabook, a rough guide:

  1. Use a PH 0 size screwdriver to remove the bottom cover. If it's not a Philips screw, it may be Torx, most likely T5 or T6, although I have seen smaller
  2. If the bottom cover doesn't want to come off, use some of iFixit's Spudger or a iFixit Opening Tool to pop off the clips holding the bottom in place. If that doesn't work try a Jimmy. Slide the tool in between the bottom casing and the upper casing and run it along the seam until it stops. Pry the clip off and continue around.
  3. To clean the fan, hold the fan hub and use a can of compressed air, or better yet, use a Datavac. Don't let the fan spin up, or it may damage the logic board header that it's attached to. If using a can of air, fire in short bursts, and let the can warm up between use for optimal performance.
  4. Find the battery SKU and see if you can find a replacement online. ASUS may not offer replacements, but you may be able to find one off of Amazon. Just make sure that the replacement battery has the appropriate safety certifications, otherwise you could end up with a charred paperweight.

It may not help, but: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/UX30...

Make sure you are always touching some metal part of the PC while cleaning to prevent against electrostatic discharge. You can also use the ifixit anti static wrist strap. Anti-Static Wrist Strap

@pccheese gave me the idea that I meant to put in but didn't. Thanks!

You may also want to do a web search for the technical guide/service guide/technician guide for your particular notebook. Many older laptops and desktops came with service guides, but the trend of providing these manuals, either on a disk, online or in paper, unfortunately died out around 2006.

Yea. I love repair manuals. I tried to find one for this, but I couldn't find it.

@steff123 just follow these instructions to disassemble your Asus. That will get you to the fan as well as anything else.
