I gave my father his first computer. My Power PC mini. He just gave it back. I want to use it as a file server in my studio. It's an older 1.2 Ghtz model. Is it worth while. Or would it be a waste of time and money. I could possibly run Linux. I have Power PC copies archived. Any tips on upgrade and OS.

what/how you intend to "serve". With OS X straight out of the box using "sharing" you can provide many services. CD/DVD photos, music, files, printers, scanners etc. With certain other Applications, (Adobe comes to mind) one computer of any sort can act as a "server".
To setup a "true server" you'd need Mac OSX server or an open source software application. Of course you'd have to meet the system requrement for whatever software you choose. So as long as your machine meets the RAM, storage, network and processor needs of the software (or you find software that works with the PPC) anything is possible. Without knowing more I can't give a better answer.

Sounds like regular Mac OS would suit your needs? if just file sharing with other macs? small enough to make it a print server too (share a printer) if you like. If only using macs this would be easiest.
As far as Linux goes that would run on this machine, that would depend on what you want to do and if you want to provide more then just file sharing services for more then one type of platform. Also all of these services and other programs are free.

Pick the power PC version. If your computer does not have a lot of hardware resources you can run Xbuntu which uses the XFCE desktop.
You can add services like FTP, Samba, SSH, etc.....I assume you are somewhat familiar with Linux based on the question? Some experience might be required depending on what you will be doing.
Using regular Ubuntu you will have a graphical front end unlike the sever edition of ubuntu which is fine, but does not have a native graphical environment just command line, not "the best" as far as servers go.
That is just me, I like Ubuntu, it's what I use.

I am not sure which version of mint and other distros you would use for a powerpc type computer, someone else might have to chime in to answer that.
They are quite a few distros/flavors out there to choose from...........
