Mac won't turn on after power surge

We heard a pop and started to smell smoke, and realized it was from the outlet we had my mom's Mac plugged into after she tried to start her it, and nothing happened at all. I believe that the surge fried the psu because there was smoke residue on the inside of the display, and 0/4 of the indicator LEDs are lighting up when I took it apart. I'm wondering if that's a correct assumption, and if there is a guide to replacing it if the psu is the issue or whatever else might be the problem.

Issac, if you open it up and can take close pictures of any damage you see and add them to your question(link below will show how to add image), I am sure this will give the ifixit volunteers a better idea of what will be required in the repair.

UPDATE: After opening it up, there doesn't appear to be any damage to the power supply itself. Is there any where I can find a pinout for it to check the voltage levels?

You are correct, at the minimum the power supply is fried. Here's what the diagnostic lights indicate:

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Diagnostic LED's

According to your exact model the power supplies are:

661-4478 250 watt or

661-4422 240 watt

This summer I found a suppler out of China on eBay selling them brand new for around $27.

Probably old new stock that they are just trying to move.

I would wait the extra time rather than putting in a used part.

There does not appear to be a guide for the 24", but the installation for the 20" should be almost identical.

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Power Supply Replacement

If you can't find the part at a decent price, i.e., under $50 I would be reticent to spend a lot of money on a 9 year old machine. Your hard drive data is most likely recoverable using an adapter or a 3.5" external enclosure.

A working unit can be had on eBay for $200, so keep in mind what your machine is worth. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iMac-A1225...

Isaac, Electronics are often covered by home owners insurance for this, you may want to check and see if the computer is covered under your mothers insurance policy and make a claim, repair/replacement if deductible is not too much. Good luck.

My Imac hasn't been turning on after a power surge from a blow-dryer. However the imac was plugged into a surge bar. I have read numerous reviews of this happening to people and someone said they talked to a worker at an apple store and he said that your computer goes into a locked state anywhere from 24-72 hours after. I just want to know if I should leave my computer unplugged or plugged in while I wait for it to decide when it wants to turn itself back on? Does this matter?! Any help would be appreciated :)
