So I was just given this iMac and on startup, the machine chimes but it will not boot from either the internal hard drive or from the Snow Leopard install DVD. The display remains all white and I never get the blinking question mark so I'm thinking it is a bad GPU. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this problem? I'd be very appreciative.

The white screen is usually indicative of a bad hard drive. I'd try disconnecting the internal drive and booting from the original system installation DVD (10.5.6) or a retail version of 10.6. Using a gray disk from another machine usually doesn't work.

Bless you Mayer! I thought it might be the hard drive too as I couldn't hear it spin up. Was expecting a flashing question mark with a bad HD but I'm guessing this particular situation might have disabled SATA on the logic board which would account for not being able to boot from the DVD but not 100% sure about that. Popped in an old 500GB Seagate that I had with Snow Leopard already installed and Voila! Booted right up. All is right with the world. Thanks so much for your assistance.
I'd replace with a Seagate SSHD for a cheap speed upgrade.
I'd just add an SSD if I were keeping the machine for myself, but I'm giving it to a friend whose ancient MacBook Pro is held together with spit and chewing gum. This will still be a huge upgrade for her and if she can afford an SSD down the road, I'll install it for her then. I just cobbled the dead iMac together with spares I had lying around as the stock machine was just given to me. I've got an SSD in my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro with a 2.4 GHz Core2Duo and it's the best $60 upgrade I've ever done even with the slower SATA II interface. I think of SSHDs as more of a stop gap measure and I wasn't going to order a brand new drive just to get an orphaned machine up and running. But thanks for the suggestion. Probably keep it in mind if she needs cheap but larger storage space than she'd be able to afford in the SSD segment though. But even the 500GB drive is twice what she had been using in her laptop which I'd already upgraded once from I think 80GB to 250GB. Again, thanks for the suggestion.
Not an SSD drive, an SSHD hybrid drive. Much cheaper.
Yes, I got that as I said if she needed more storage than the 500GB drive I installed an SSHD Hybrid would probably be great but I think I'd consider a 60GB SSD in the optical drive slot and create a Fusion drive for her. I rolled my own Fusion in my 2011 iMac with a Samsung 120GB 850 EVO and upgraded the HD to 1TB. Unbelievable speed boost. And I didn't have to sacrifice my DVD drive.
