Replaced charging port now won't boot. What did I do wrong?

I replaced the charging port in my 4th gen iPod touch, which didn't seem like a big deal, as I have done some microsoldering before. After replacing it I plugged it into my computer. Nothing. No backlight, no beeps, no signs of life whatsoever. I checked my solder connections and found that the far left ground pins were bridged to the pin down and to the right. I removed the bridge and tried again. No change.

I used a cheap hot air station to remove the old charging port. Is there anything that I could have overheated in that area that would make it do that? Or would that pin being shorted have blown something. If so, what would it have blown? I don't see any burn marks, and it never got hot anywhere while plugged in.

Does anyone have any tips on how to replace these ports more safely?

Thanks in advance for any help.
