Why is my washer stopping and starting throughout the cycle?

The washer cycles through but stops randomly. Sometimes it goes for 8-9 minutes then stops for 30-45 minutes at a time. Sometimes it only goes for 10-15 seconds before stopping again.

It smells like some sort of rubber burning or something when it stops mid-cycle.

Any ideas will help. Thanks

Most Frequent Causes for Washer stops mid cycle

Cause 1

Lid Switch Assembly

The lid switch assembly prevents the washer from spinning when the lid is open. If the lid switch assembly fails, the washer may stop mid-cycle. To determine if the lid switch assembly is defective, use a multimeter to test each of the lid switches for continuity. If a lid switch does not have continuity, replace it.

Cause 2

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly

The door lock secures the washer door shut during operation. Once the washer door is closed, the washer can begin operating. If the washer door is not latched shut, the door switch prevents the washer from operating. If the door lock is defective, the washer may stop mid cycle. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Inspect the door lock for damage. If the door lock is damaged or does not latch properly, replace it. To determine if the door lock has failed electrically, consult your washer’s diagram and use a multimeter to test each of the door lock switches for continuity. If one of the switches does not have continuity, replace the switch.

Cause 3

Water Inlet Valve

During the rinse cycle, the water inlet valve opens to allow water to enter the wash tub. If the water inlet valve fails, the washer will continue waiting for the water to enter the washer, causing it to stop mid-cycle. To determine if the water inlet valve is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the water inlet valve does not have continuity, replace it.

Try removing dial assembly from panel and connecting leads to ohms meter while advancing dial manually. You could also pull the front plate off of the dial assembly exposing contacts and rotating discs that connect the contacts. Look for burnt metal caused by arcing, and clean contact points, make sure discs are closing contact points correctly.

LoL... feeling kind-of stupid my kenmore top loading washing machine would fill then start the wash cycle for a few seconds then stop then a few more seconds like 15 -20 it would start washing I read these symptoms point to bad brushes in the motor well I could find the brushes I even tested the motor with a multi meter. OK first off I discovered I had a broken motor coupler so now thinking I had 2 issues I replaced the motor coupler . It turns out my girlfriend and put the wash selector to handwash this was the reason for the start and stop wash pattern. And I was thinking a bad motor . After feeling perplexed I was relieved that my washer was up and running.

Hi

I would buy a set of brushes they are easy to replace or try clean out the pump from under the machine.

My fridgidaire Electrolux washer will start out like it’s doing great and then start randomly start stop timeout start click start …. I thought it would be the door lock assembly so I replaced that… nope, still does it. The door lock part that’s on the door side is intact and fits well…. What’s next?
