Why are the buttons on the top plate not working?

The camera has been well looked after and hasn't been exposed to any water but all of the mode selector buttons across the top plate work intermittently rather then reliably. The shutter button and main dial are perfectly fine but I often give up and use the rear screen selection function when I want to adjust those parameters.
